PENDLETON, Indiana -- The American Speed Association has announced the final date for its 2004 ASA Late Model Series. The event will take place at Calhoun County Speedway in Springport, Mich., on Saturday, August 21.
"I think it's a fine opportunity for the Late Model Series to compete in the shadow of NASCAR and its highest divisions at the nearby Michigan Speedway on the same weekend," said Ron Varney, ASA Late Model Series executive director. "This finalization of our schedule allows the competitor base to move fully ahead with their plans entering the 2004 campaign."
In the later part of November, Paul Zimmerman and Jim Leasure, co-owners of Spartan Speedway in Mason, Mich., purchased Springport Speedway and instantly renamed the track to Calhoun County Speedway.
The new owners then began preparations on improving the facility with the addition of more pit slabs, black top in spectator areas, fencing and new kitchen equipment.
"This event will undoubtedly become one of our most important shows of the season," said Jim Leasure, Calhoun County Speedway promoter. "We are very much looking forward to hosting a premier event of the caliber of the ASA Late Model Series season."
Located three miles north of Springport, Mich., at the corners of Calhoun, Jackson and Eaton Counties, the .375-mile high-banked track of Calhoun County Speedway will open for its inaugural season in May of 2004.

Officials are planning for 100-lap green flag races with no pit stops unless a car is damaged in an on-track incident. The cars will include makes from three major manufacturers - General Motors, Ford and Dodge. They will utilize template bodies and engines from all three.
