LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- The new 2004 team of Quality Motorsports scored another victory at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this week as Mike Ray took the checkered flag on Saturday evening.
Quality Motorsports had an outstanding night placing three drivers in the top ten with Mike Ray winning the race; Mike Cofer who ended up in victory lane last time out finishing fifth; and newcomer Justin Martz turning in an impressive performance with a seventh place finish. “This team has some very talented drivers who are capable of being competitive in every race this season,” said team owner Jerry Spilsbury who also pilots the number 62 car for the team. Just two races into the season, Mike Ray leads the series in points followed closely by Mike Cofer. Justin Martz leads the field in rookie points.
It was an exciting night of racing at the Bullring with numerous cars making contact early and often. Two of the four Quality Motorsports cars were sent to the back of the field on lap 15 when Mike Cofer who was running in fifth position in the number 04 car and Justin Martz who was in fourth driving the number 60 car got tangled up causing the caution flag to come out. Mike Ray who had been in sixth place moved quickly to the front of the field and stayed there for the rest of the night. Both Cofer and Martz battled their way back through the pack but were unexpectedly left stranded in fifth and seventh positions respectively when the race was cut short.
The night was marred by a number of cautions caused in part by cold windy conditions and intermittent drizzle and the caution flag came out for the last time on lap 39 of the scheduled 50 laps after a number of cars made contact in turn four. NASCAR officials at that point called for a red flag, stopped all the cars on the track, and announced that the race was over. However, several minutes later the officials announced that they were going to go to a green, white and checkered flag sequence giving the cars two final laps to battle for position. In the lead, Ray held off the rest of the field to capture his first win of the season.
The Quality Motorsports team takes to the track at the Bullring again next Saturday night for what promises be another exciting night of racing.
