BOISE, Idaho -- Six Rocky Mountain Challenge Series teams braved intermittent rain showers Tuesday at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls, Idaho in order to get track time in preparation for the series’ opener next Saturday in Salt Lake City, UT. David Minegar of Boise, Idaho set the pace with a quick lap of 14.45 seconds around the one-third mile paved oval.
Teams tested the new series tire from Hoosier and gave it high marks. “The tire is harder then I have raced on in the past, but it stays real consistent,” said David Minegar. “With the tire rule we have in the series, it is going to be important that the tires last and I feel real good about the Hoosiers.”
Also taking to the track Tuesday afternoon was Tom Hill of Boise. Hill was taking his first laps in a Late Model after competing for one season in the Grand American Modified class at Meridian Speedway. “It is a great feeling to be able to get on the gas and have the car stick,” Hill said. “I am so excited about the upcoming season. This is going to be a lot of fun.”
Monte Potter (Boise), Craig Bell (Kuna), Brian Warf (Boise), and Clint Eames (Hailey) all logged laps on Tuesday. Warf, an 18 year old senior at Meridian High School is thrilled to move up to a touring series after competing in Late Models for only one season. “We bought one of John Dillon’s former tour cars and built a new spec head motor,” Warf said. “I felt real comfortable out there and I know the car is going to be competitive.”
The RMCS begins its inaugural year of competition in 2004 where local Late Model competitors from Boise to Salt Lake will have the opportunity to compete in a regional touring series that will be a premiere special event at several area racetracks. The series will feature a ten race schedule with stops at Chaparral Speedway (ID), Magic Valley Speedway (ID), and Rocky Mountain Raceways (UT).
