SMALL PROBLEMS CAN'T DAMPEN EXCITEMENT AT ALL AMERICAN

A water pipe problem inadvertently flooded the All American Speedway, Saturday, and after a 45 minute delay, racing resumed with a loose upper groove. All five main event winners made race-winning passes on the outside, however, of the 1/4 mile, high-banked, paved oval track in Roseville.

The flood occurred when water began flowing out of the pipes that are supposed to only flow during Enduro races. They were accidentally turned on during a Modified heat race, flooding the back-straightaway and turn two with cold water.

During the 45 minute delay, cars circled slowly to dry the track. Dri-Clean was used to help dry the track, but it ended up being spread all over the racing surface, with the outside lane covered in the fine powder.

Roy Smith of Citrus Heights defeated Mario-Rios Davis of Sacramento for the Bomber win after an impressive door-to-door battle for the final ten laps. Smith ended up beating Davis by inches at the line.

Davis had pulled away, until a big accident on lap 25 closed the field back together. Denise Reinhart and Jim McGinnis Jr. of Antelope got tangled off of turn four, sending Reinhart spinning. She clipped Jeff Wilkins of Citrus Heights and hit the wall head-on underneath the flag stand. Reinhart was then plowed into by John Cummings of Rescue. This all happened with the pack darting by.

Smith and Rios-Davis were followed by Jami Kupper of, McGinnis, and Jim McCully of Roseville. Smith, Brian Caper, and Bill Shelton were heat winners.

2003 Modified champion Hap Ferree of Nevada City went wheel-to-wheel with three time champion Jim Miller of Orangevale before passing him on lap 32 for the win.

Billy Bowerman of Rocklin was on the pole, and led the first 16 laps, until Steve Schaefer of Granite Bay spun in the middle of the track to bring out the yellow flag.

On the restart, Miller powered by for the lead. On lap 25, Scott Woessner of Roseville and Tim Smith of Roseville collided, and two laps later Schaefer hit the turn two wall after a tangle with Gary Glenn of Orangevale.

Ferree had his first shot at Miller on lap 28, but Miller quickly pulled away. Ferree got another chance on lap 31 after a brief caution when John Mamula of Citrus Heights and Les Friend of Galt tangled. Using aggressive driving, Ferree got the lead on the outside and took the checkers followed by Miller, Andy Field of Rocklin, Willie Horn Jr. of Marysville, and Derrick Doering of Orangevale.

Heats were won by Friend and Field, with Ferree winning the dash. Woessner had a 13.51 second lap to lead off qualifications.

Jason Romero of Cameron Park, the 2003 Mini Stock champion, had a stellar night of competition picking up a clean sweep. Romero started off by setting a new track record with a 14.37 second lap in qualifying, then he won his heat, the dash, and the main event.

Ed Bruening of Elverta led the first nine laps until being passed by Chris Marks of Auburn. Bruening cut down a tire heading off of turn two, and a big chain reaction incident was triggered. Jason Kasick, John Tipton of Sacramento, and Jim Badeker were all involved.

On the restart, Marks slowed severely, and was passed by Matt Beardslee of Antelope. Just three laps later, Marks exited, while Romero, who started twelfth, shot by Beardslee on the outside. Romero was followed in by Brian Macomber of Roseville, Beardslee, Dale Bulmer of North Highlands, and Doug Abrams of Sacramento. Tipton was the other heat winner.

Heavy lapped traffic allowed 2003 Street Stock champion Richard Lavallee of Dixon to beat a strong field of 19 cars. Lavallee, who was the fast-time qualifier, rushed forward from his twelfth starting spot and picked off Kirk Shorter of Sacramento in traffic on lap 20.

Nancy Garton of Dixon dominated the early portion of the race, until lap 13, when Josh Whitfield of Rocklin spun after a collision with Mel Wilson of Rio Linda. Whitfield returned from the infield in front of Garton, causing her to slip back to ninth place. Shorter assumed the lead at that point.

But seven laps later, Lavallee made his move on the outside, while traffic blocked Shorter.

A huge accident on lap 26 was started when Dick Meadows of Sacramento had his engine go down entering turn one. The fluid he left behind sent Mykyl Ensor and Chris Lambert of Loomis into the wall with heavy damage.

Lavallee was followed in by Shorter, Richard Poppert Jr. of Sacramento, Phil Wilkins of Rio Linda, and Garton. Heats were won by Buck Williams of Sacramento and Wilson. Wilson also won the dash.

Shawn Latiker of Sacramento dominated the Western Auto Racing steel-bodied vintage Hardtops main event. It was the second of six appearances for the traveling group of racers.

Latiker’s 1932 Ford Victoria was hooked up, as he qualified with a 15.34 second lap for a new track record. In the main, he moved from fourth to first in two laps, over taking club organizer Chuck Prather of Lincoln.

Behind them, Dennis Allen of Carmichael, in his Chevy straight six, battled with Brett (Rocko) Hulsey, in a 1932 Ford powered by a 350 Chevy. Allen got loose on lap seven, allowing Hulsey to get by easily.

Hulsey used some interesting driving tactics to get through traffic, diving to the grass and the apron on several occasions. Hulsey reeled in Prather, but feel short by 1/2 car length.

The top-five were: Latiker, Prather, Hulsey, Allen, and Tom Pfeiffer of Sutter Creek. Hulsey won the heat race and Prather won the dash.

Next week is round five of the regular four division points line-up of Modifieds, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, and Bombers. The Pro Stock/Late Model challenge will also take to the track with its second round with 125 laps scheduled. \
