INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana -- The short-trackers of the American Speed Association (ASA) National Tour made their superspeedway debut at the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Ky., on Friday night.
Rookie Jay Middleton took the Jani-King pole with a 31.530 at a speed of 171.265 mph, but it was last lap excitement that gave Lagasse his victory.
With about 25 laps to go, fellow ASA rookie Wade Day was about to walk away with his first win…and he thought he did.
Coming out of Turn 4, Lagasse moved in on Day and passed him on the low side, but to Day's knowledge, Lagasse never did.
Day thought he had won and did the conventional winning burnout, while Lagasse parked his car on the frontstretch to congratulate Day.
As Lagasse was walking over to Day, ASA officials informed him that he was the winner.
Lagasse nipped Day coming out of the turn and scored the victory by a foot.
Ringers' drivers Mike Garvey, Reed Sorenson, Butch Miller and Toby Porter finished fifth, eighth, ninth and 10th respectively.
Other Ringers' notables were John Dalziel, 13th; Peter Cozzolino, 15th; Todd Kluever, 17th; Kevin Cywinski, 28th and Rich Loch, 29th.
The ASA National Tour's next stop is Lake Erie Speedway in Erie, Pa., on Saturday, May 29.
