TRACY, California -- Todd Bammer was the comeback kid tonight as he won the AC Delco Late Model event at Altamont Motorsports Park. After losing his brakes and involving another racer on a previous evening, everything seemed to be working well and Bammer worked it right to the front. Ceres’ Verg Beaty, that sly “silver fox” was not far behind as he wove his way into second. Jason Gilbert also of Pleasanton was third. He is definitely evolving into someone to be considered in the championship quest. He is consistently in the front-runners. David Hulsey, who set fast time again and won his heat race, came in fourth. Modesto’s Doyal Moen held onto fifth. A red flag marred this race as Livermore’s Steve Dutton had his transmission literally break apart throwing fluid from turn four onto the front straight. Cars were going everywhere. It looked like a bad ice skating scene. Luckily the top five got stopped before joining the melee. It was pretty scary but no injuries were reported. In last weeks Double mains it was reported that Dutton had come in second behind Jason Gilbert in his #04 Pontiac. However it was Don Campbell, from Campbell, CA. who came in second in his #05 racer. Dutton finished third.
The Groth Bros. Chevrolet Baby Grands had a “Totally Tracy” win night as Jeremy Wood again took the win, Dave Tyler and Dave Figuerrido carried the two-three spots and Mike Conti was fourth. Conti also won the Dash. Brain Carter after sitting out a week, was fifth. Wood is such a natural in the cars; he seems to make his way to the front no matter where he starts. He was also fast time this evening. Dave Tyler had Dave Figuerrido all over him but never able to get by him.
Super Stocks had Tracy’s Matt Erickson win his first main event in this division. Erickson looked like a “dirt tracker” as he took it to the lead but he has the feel of his racer and knows how to use it. Carl Edberg from Redwood City qualified second and came in second in the main. Rookie Jesse Hutto from Manteca had his best race to date as he held third. Pleasanton’s Chris Bammer was quick qualifier but traffic kept him in fourth. Gary Hazelhofer from Pacifica rounded out the top five.
Mini Cup Jr. Star main winner of the night was Brentwood’s Doff Cooksey. Cooksey is also in the points lead and won the Trophy Dash. “Big D” Dominic Portera from Morgan Hill was quick time tonight and came in second. Hollister’s Sarah Davis took third and is holding down second in the points race. Rookie Todd Ruby from Stockton was fourth and Manteca’s Jacob Gomes finished fifth. Jacob and Brother Josh won the two heat races tonight. Only one racing incident brought out the yellow for this main event as Rookie Scott Chapeta had a hard hit on the front wall and had to give it up for the night.
California Asphalt Sprintcar Association completed the evening with thirty laps of thunder. Nick Rescino, Jr. of San Francisco seems to have gotten all of the bugs worked out of his sprinter as he maneuvered to the front. Oroville’s Destiney Hayes grabbed the lead and held it for several laps and after Rescino took the lead held on to a solid second. Hayes easily won her heat. This impressive young racing lady has only been on asphalt five times including tonight. Brian McClish from Santa Rosa also ran strong in the lead for a time and he spun out coming through turn two and still made it back to third. Bryan Bullard who had been out of his car for the last couple of races was fourth and Rookie Jared Consani also from Santa Rosa had a great fifth place finish.
Altamont’s regular racing program will resume on June 5, but we will feature the new sport sweeping the countryside called “Drifting”. This looks like something to be seen as fans were treated to a demonstration. They use both the “Fastest Half Mile in the West” and the Quick Quarter Mile. Another first for this area, join us next Sunday May 30th for a spectacular holiday event.
