BAKERSFIELD, California -- Burney Lamar, currently third in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division Southwest Series points standings, is one pumped-up race car driver. He is among some 45 entries for the Snap-On Tools 200 at Infineon Raceway (CA) Saturday afternoon over the 1.9 mile road course.
Says the 23 year old W. Sacramento, CA. college graduate, "Man, I'm really excited about this race. This is one of the biggest races of the year. There's lots of points on the line and we can either loose 'em or make some up, and we figure to make some up."
Lamar and his team took his Groeniger/HPS Mechanical/Tri-C/Victory Circle Chassis Monte Carlo to Infineon a couple of weeks ago for some testing, and was pleased with the results.
"While I don't have any specific times, some people who were there said we were pretty fast. We got some good notes, came back and did some homework, and hope to make it go faster."
Burney says he also has some other reasons for his enthusiasm. "There are going to be some 400 fans in the Groeniger tent at the track, as well as family. Obviously, I want to do good."
The 2001 Series rookie of the year is also looking to make it two in a row, as he won the
Series last race at Irwindale (CA) Speedway on May 29. In 2002, he backed up an Irwindale win
with another win at Madera (CA) Speedway three weeks later. Currently, he has one win, three top
fives, four top tens, and two Bud poles to his credit in this seasons first six races.![]()
