Mike Zamora from Kennewick, Washington has won many late model races in his career, but never at the fast ½ mile at Yakima Speedway.
Starting on the pole for the 75 lap main event, the new car of Zamora’s looked to be on a string as he powered his way to a convincing win over a stellar field of Late Model drivers. Last race winner, Ken Olson, drove another steady, hard race to come home in the runner up position. Fast time winner, Mike Longton, was third after a spirited duel with eventual fourth place finisher, Troy Tramell. Erick Hargraves finished fifth, with Ron Bemis, Angela Cope, Christopher Kalsch, Ed Thomsen and Amber Cope rounding out the top ten.
A smaller than usual field of Street Stocks lined up for a 40 lap main. Jeff Mullins started on the pole due to a problem during qualifying. Mullins took off at the green and looked to be the man to beat. The young racer held the top spot until lap 13 when Rich Peters moved up from his fifth starting position to take over the point. Mullins car had a mechanical problem and he dropped to 7th in the final standings. Points leader, Jack Anderson drove a hard race with Bob VanAmburg on his bumper most of the race. Anderson finished third with Van Amburg in third and Andy Beaman in fourth. Terry Cook finished a credible fifth position driving the Erick Hargraves car after engine problems were discovered early in the day on his usual car.
The popular Hornet cars thrilled the crowd again with tight, close racing on the small oval. A.J. Rose won in his ford Probe. Shane Johnson, point’s leader Jonathon Ray, Charlie Fernandez and Jeremy Mullins taking the top spots.
Next race at the Speedway is slated foe July 3rd, with mid-season championship races for Late Models, Streets and Hobbies. On July 4th, the giant Demo Derby is set and will also feature the Hornet cars. Following the crashing a huge fireworks display will end the Holiday weekend of racing.
