RACING FOR ROY, GARY SMITH TO RACE IN HONOR OF LATE FATHERNASCAR GRAND NATIONAL DIVISION, WEST SERIES
Source: Smith Motorsports
Gary will be driving Dick Midgley’s 2002 Monte Carlo with two-time NASCAR Northwest Tour Champion Kelly Tanner acting as crew chief. While none of his career victories have come at Evergreen, Gary has had considerable success at the place he considers to be his home track. In four previous Grand National starts there he has recorded three-second place finishes and a sixth. The return to Monroe will have extra meaning for the entire Smith Motorsports Team as the race is being run in memory of Gary’s dad, four-time NASCAR Grand National Division, West Champion Roy Smith. Roy was killed earlier this year in a tragic commercial fishing boat accident off the north tip of Vancouver Island. Roy acted as Gary’s mentor throughout his career. “When the idea of doing a race in my dad’s memory came up the support of people who were involved with Smith Motorsports in the past was overwhelming. To be able to do it at Evergreen Speedway just makes it that more meaningful. We will have a large group of family, friends and fans from Canada and the USA in attendance encouraging and supporting our efforts.”
The race will be televised LIVE on HDNET and be re-played on Speed Channel August 14, 2004 at 9am. See Also .: News Index | E-mail to a Friend Article posted by RacingWest.com staff on 06/29/2004. http://www.racingwest.com
