ROOKIE KYLE CATTANACH WINS 2004 REDWOOD ACRES FAIR CHAMPIONSHIP

Kyle Cattanach wheeled his 2003 LaHorgue stock clip Grand Prix to victory circle 3 times over June 25-26th weekend in Eureka, CA. The 2 day race was Eureka’s annual Fair Classic. This was race 6 and 7 for the North State Challenge series which travels to 4 different tracks in California: Redwood Acres Raceway, Shasta Race Park, Lakeport Speedway, and Ukiah Speedway, and 1 track in Oregon: Douglass Co. Fairground.

After timing in 3rd on Friday night behind Bill Binns and Josh Bews, Kyle took over as points leader in the series. In Friday’s trophy dash, Cattanach inherited the outside starting spot when Dale Roth left with mechanical problems. Kyle convincingly won the dash honors. Friday’s main had 21 cars and rolled an 8 for the car inversion for the start. This put Cattanach 3rd row outside. The Super Late models had good racing action for many laps until race leaders, Oregon’s Rick Spencer and Canada’s Darrell Midgley tangled on corners 3 and 4. Roseville’s Josh Bews took over as race leader with Redding’s Kyle Cattanach in 2nd and Upper Lake’s Bill Binns as 3rd. Friday night’s win would go to Josh Bews with a strong 2nd place finish for Kyle Cattanach.

Saturday would dawn with the Cattanach crew missing crew chief, Chuck LaHorgue, who was attending another racer’s wedding. Chuck had given Kyle a great car Friday and Kyle was a little nervous to take over crew chief duties in addition to driving. He made some critical changes and wheeled his car to a 2nd place in time trials barely missing fast time honors by 7thousandths of a second. For the second time for the weekend, Bill Binns would take fast time honors with a 15.350 to Kyle’s 15.357.

Luck played in Cattanach’s favor when a 4 was rolled for the starting inversion which put him 2nd row inside behind Friday’s winner, Josh Bews. Outside pole starter, Mike Doss got the jump and took the lead for the Super Late models. Again, the drivers put on a great race for the fair crowd. Halfway through the race, new comer Rich Crowell was hit from behind and spun on turn 2. Things happened fast and 2nd place Josh Bews couldn’t avoid Crowell and hammered him hard. Both cars had to leave the field. This left Doss holding the lead with Cattanach 2nd and Binns 3rd. Kyle took advantage on lap 50 when race leader, Mike Doss was a little loose off corner 4. On lap 54 out of 60 there was another restart and this gave Binns a chance at Cattanach, but Kyle had a great restart and that gave him the room he needed to make it to Victory Circle.

Redwood Acres Raceway was having it’s own race to the Fair Championship for whoever had the best combined finish for Friday and Saturday. With a 1st and a 2nd place finish under his hood, Kyle Cattanach took the 2004 Redwood Acres Fair Championship. With the Championship came a beautiful trophy, a Redwood Acres Raceway jacket, and $1000 payday in addition to the North State’s $1000 payout for 1st and $750 for 2nd.

This was the second win for points leader Kyle Cattanach in the North State Challenge series. He had won at the previous race at the Douglass County Fairgrounds in Roseburg, OR. He is the first driver this season to win 2 races this year.
