The weather was scorching, the racing was hot and the fireworks were cool. Sunday July 4th South Sound Speedway had a great program. The Washington Association of Demolition Drivers (WADD) and the Figure-8 didn’t disappoint the extremely large crowd that gathered at the 3/8ths mile oval in Rochester, WA.

Rich Bailey broke the track record again in the Figure-8 division. He broke his own record with a 22.503. Charles Meadors made a great pass on Frank Loescher in the trophy dash to win. Mike Ross led all eight laps of the heat race with David Dix right on him the entire time for his second heat race win of the season. Ty Vance took the lead from the first lap in the main event. Rich Bailey was running second and tried numerous times to make a move on Vance. Ian Alder spun on lap three going into the X but collected himself and lost one lap to the pack. Bailey and Vance were gaining on lapped traffic and it came into play on lap eight when Ernie Steele and Richard Shanebrook both went down. Bailey still couldn’t get around Vance, despite his efforts. On the last lap in the last two corners Vance and Bailey got together as Bailey tried to pass. Both went into the infield but Vance pulled out of it to win the main event. This was Vance’s first win of the season. Frank Loescher used the incident to his advantage to take second as well as Charles Meadors who was third and Jim Burch who finished fourth. Bailey ended up fifth with David Dix in sixth and Mike Ross seventh.

There were 35 Regular WADD cars at the track on Sunday Night. Mike Clark and Tracy Gradel were trophy dash winners. The first heat race was won by Mike Ross with Mike Charles second and Dave Hensley third. Jim Addy won the second heat race followed closely by Bruce Jasper and Michael Hardin. Tracy Gradel won the third heat race with Larry Jametsky and John Waldron in tow. The big destruction derby got under way and within a few minutes Joe farmer had hit Larry Jametsky and flipped him over. The derby went red to get Jametsky out of the car but he was fine. The race continued and hit after hit took place. In the end Jim Addy was the winner with Dave Hensley second and Brian Hall third.

Nick Albanese won the dash for the Mini-WADD. Don Brevik led Renny Marose around the track for the final three laps of the heat race to take the win. Marose was second with Dan Wamskey in third. After Aaron Grogan led the first three laps of the main event Marose took over. Try as they might no one could catch him and he won the main event. Grogan was second with Nick Albanese in third. Jesse Crawford finished in fourth position while Dave Goodwin took fifth. Jo Campbell took the dash for WADD Powder Puff division with Linda Ross in second. Campbell also powered her way to the front of the full contact heat race with Joyce Jasper second and Angela Jametsky third. Linda Ross finished fourth followed by Teela Thrasher in fifth.
