The first visit of the race season to Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls, Idaho was another good turnout for the series with 19 cars showing and 18 making the main event. Jeff Hillock won the 1st heat during which Jared Elwell, Don Beamis got together with Gary Porter coming out of turn one. Elwell came out with a chunk of right front fender missing while Beamis and Porter only suffering very minor damage. The second Heat race had Zan Sharp taking the win with the number one qualifier Ken Rich taking second.
The main event saw great racing action from the drop of the green flag. The usual invert of the field saw the faster cars work there way through the field. Joe Hood came up from 10th to take the lead and start to pull away from the rest of the field. Just as Hood was about to start lapping field, caution came out on lap fourteen when Art Smith caught fire going into turn three, the caution quickly turned to a red flag when Ken Rich also caught fire at the opposite end of the track. With both cars at opposite end of the track attention was being paid to Smiths car as flames where coming up through the hood and shooting two to three feet into the air. The Magic Valley Speedway safety personnel quickly had both fires out. Rich suffered slight damage but still had to leave the race while Smith suffered some heavy fire damage and also had to leave.
With the field tightened back up for the restart, the green flag was dropped and Chris Schrade immediately brought out the caution when he spun coming out of turn one. Once again the field line up for the restart. The green flag was given again. Hood, Hillock and Kidd again pulled away from the field, but this time Hood could not shake them. Ted Garrabrant left the track on lap 37. Kidd passed Hillock for second place on lap 40
On lap 44 Kidd made a pass coming out of turn four onto the front straight that brought the crowd to their feet. He had pulled along side Hood on the inside while coming up fast on lap traffic, he then neatly tucked the number 88 in front of Hood while at the same time passing the lap car on the outside. Lap 47 saw Schrade leave the track.
Kidd was then able to hold off both Hood and Hillock to take the checkered flag for his first win of the Intermountain Late Model Series.![]()
