BAKERSFIELD, California -- Rookie David Mayhew from Atascadero, Calif., had another great run and extended his point lead. Mayhew placed second in the “Thursday Night Thunder” 50 lap race at Mesa Marin Raceway. This is Mayhew’s 11th top 10 this season and his 8th top 5 in the first twelve races of the season.
“The car was really good tonight,” stated Mayhew. “Devlin Autry really had a fast car and with Josh Horn having problems we played it safe and brought the car home in one piece. It was a fun race to come to the line two wide, I just wish that we could have gotten this one. This really helps in our championship chase.”
The 22-year-old rookie started the night by winning the heat race. Mayhew then started on the inside third row for the main event. Mayhew quickly made the dash to the front and was past Horn and Burrow very quickly. Then the yellow flag flew and bunched the field back up with Mayhew sitting third. On the re-start Mayhew made quick work of pole-sitter Gene Fife and was off to chase down Autry. The next 30 laps of the race Mayhew and Autry distanced themselves from the field by over half a lap when the next caution flew. Coming to the caution though Autry would spin and that put Mayhew in the lead with a four lap dash to the finish. Mayhew got a good re-start but Autry got up next to him out of turn four and the duo went two wide the next two laps. Mayhew finished a close second.
"The car was good tonight for only having one new tire," Mayhew said. “We have saved tires these past two weeks and that should set us up nice for the rest of the year and the chase to the championship."
Mayhew is contending in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series’ Sunbelt Region points championship. With another top 5 the team is happy and hopes to move up in the regional standings. He is also well ahead of the next Rookie of the Year contender and leading the championship as Mesa Marin.
The next race for the DMI team will be the upcoming “Twin 40’s” Saturday night at Mesa Marin.
