CORONA, California -- AAA Late Model series driver Andrew Lewis has broken into the top ten in the championship point standings and is in the fight for the coveted Rookie of the Year title. It was his series-best finish and now ranks tenth of 42 drivers in the AAA Late Model Series at Irwindale Speedway. Currently Lewis is 20 points out of both 9th place and the rookie point lead with five races remaining.
Lewis and the #04 Lewis Racing Chevrolet qualified fourth with a time of 19.109 seconds which is the team’s second best time of the season. Because of time constraints at the track, the scheduled 50-lap race was cut to 40-laps. Lewis started on the outside of row two with the invert being three. By lap ten, Lewis was able to move into third and hold onto it until a caution at lap 17 when driver Ben Walker shot past him on the outside at the restart. Lewis would finish the day where he started. This was the team’s first top-5 finish and 6th top-10 this season.
“We had a great car,” said Lewis. “We have a Victory Circle chassis which in one of only two in the series. The other one is the in the current point leader’s car. We want to thank Chris Greeny at Finish Line Motor Sports for helping my team led by our crew chief, Ruben Munoz, get us ready to race as competitively as we have been. We are still chasing our first win this season. We as a team have been working hard to achieve our goals and feel they are attainable.”
The next Auto Club Late Model race at Irwindale Speedway will be on August 14th as Lewis and the team look to record their first win this season. Lewis, a high school senior and honor student, has previously recorded a win at Irwindale Speedway in the 2003 Speed Truck Challenge. Lewis is the youngest driver to win a major event at Irwindale Speedway. The #04 team is also actively seeking a sponsor.
