EL CAJON, CA. Gary Tamborelli finally made his way to victory lane in a points race in the late model sportsman division at Cajon Speedway Saturday night.

The Escondido veteran, who is gunning for an unprecedented fourth straight championship, outran the field to claim the 40-lap finale. Tambo opened the season by taking the 100-lap open competition race, which was a non-points race.

Saturday night Tamborelli edged out Todd McLauchlan by four car lengths. Jerry Gay had his best run of the season and came home third. Early leader Rich Green took fourth after winning the street stock feature. John Tyczki Jr. was fifth.

Pat Garity made a last lap move on the high side to edge out John Luecht for bomber stock honors. Lance Biggers breezed to an easy victory in the 25-lapper for Grand American modifieds. Gary Scheuerell won the legends race.

The late model sportsman main event was just barely underway when Russ Gregson rode hard into the first turn crashwall. The throttle appeared to stick on Gregson's Monte Carlo. After slamming into the wall, the car skidded along the wall to turn two. Gregson was conscious but was transported to the hospital for observation.

Green, McLauchlan, and Tamborelli diced for the number one spot for several laps midway through the sportsman feature. McLauchlan ceded the high groove to Tamborelli behind Green as he sought to work his way under the leader. But eventually McLauchlan had to give ground as Tamborelli took over the number two spot. Then on the 26th round, there was some contact at the head of the pack. Green ended up sliding up the track and Tamborelli took over the number one spot for good.

The bomber stock feature was a slugfest from green to checkered. Just past the midway point Scott Youngren and Mark Holland were at the front of the lead pack. Youngren broke loose in turn two and tagged Holland, who then lost control and smacked the crashwall. Also collected in the ensuing melee were Bill Holland and Bob Wickey, who had been third and fourth. This left John Luecht in front. Garity dogged him until the white flag lap when he went to the outside. He was able to pull off the pass in the final turn. Alex MacKay came home in third. Chris Boyer and Mark Schilling rounded out the top five.

Eric Seene had crossed the stripe in fourth place but was disqualified along with Bob Wickey for non-conforming engine parts. Both lost their points and prize money for the night along with their points for the season. Wickey had been second in points prior to the night; Seene had been fifth. In the street stocks Rich Green was the big beneficiary when point leader Danny Gay was black flagged twice and sent to the pits. Gay was in the lead pack with Green and Ed Hale when he tagged Hale. Hale was driving Gay's backup car. Then on the restart starter John Jensen black flagged Gay again for passing Hale before the green flag was displayed. With Hale and Gay both out of contention for the victory, Green was able to cruise to a seven-car length victory over Eric Evans. Early leader Jason Pontsler ended up third ahead of Robert Baker and Rob Overman.

In the legend feature Seth Hicks clobbered the turn three crashwall after he was drop-kicked. His car burst into flame. The fire was quickly extinguished and Hicks was uninjured. Scheuerell took the checkered flag in front of Kevin Krauss. But in this race too the finish was scrambled by disqualifications. Krause, fifth place Ben Asquith, and sixth running Gary Gladstone all were DQ'ed following the race. That left the finishing order behind Scheuerell as Tom Landreth, Don Pinkus, Harold Crafton, and Donnie Akers.
