FINAL EVENT OF 2004 NASCAR CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

BAKERSFIELD, California -- Four championships will be decided this Saturday night at Mesa Marin’s 2004 CARQUEST Auto Parts Season Finale.

The NASCAR Late Model Series, Mesa Marin’s premier NASCAR division, will see the championship come down to two drivers, rookie David Mayhew of Atascadero and Bakersfield’s Josh Horn.

Mayhew, who already wrapped up the 2004 Rookie-of-the-Year title, may become the first Mesa Marin driver to ever win the track championship title in their rookie season.

Horn, last year’s Late Model Rookie-of-the-Year and two-time Mesa Marin Street Stock Series champion, chases Mayhew into the Saturday night’s event with a 48 point deficit. With 50 points awarded to the main event winner, Horn still has a mathematical chance at the championship.

In Street Stock competition, defending champion David Hutchins suffered a huge blow to his title hopes for 2004. While running second early in last Saturday night’s main event, Hutchins slammed the turn 3 wall after losing his right front wheel. Greg Puskarich, who lead Hutchins by one point entering last Saturday’s main event, went on to his fifth win of 2004 and now carries a 30 point lead over Paul Ebersbacher.

Delano High School and Mojave High will both be looking for their first ChevronTexaco High School Racing Series championship entering the season finale. Delano leads 402 to Mojave’s 394, defending ChevronTexaco High School Racing Series championship team of North High is third with 380 points.

In the 911 Race for Youth Series, the Bakersfield City Fire Department has a slim points lead over the Bakersfield Police Department, 730 to 726.

Spectator gates open at 5:00pm, a special event - the Kern Council on Physical Fitness “Track and Trail” 5K and 10K Run will start on the front straight-away at 5:30pm, with racing starting at 7:30pm.

Mesa Marin will close its 2004 race season with the 27th annual “October Classic”, October 15, 16 and 17.
