RINGERS GLOVES WEEKEND WRAP-UP

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana -- Effects from Hurricane Ivan reeked havoc on the Eastern part of the United States late last week and over the weekend, forcing cancellations and delays in racing in that part of the country.

The 20th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Reading, Pa., were cancelled and rescheduled for October 8-10.

NHRA heads to the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas, this weekend for the 19th annual O’Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec.

NASCAR Nextel Cup Series qualifying was rained out on Friday and the current points standings set the field for the Sylvania 300 at the New Hampshire International Speedway on Sunday.

Chase contender Ryan Newman lined up for the Sylvania 300 in the 10th starting spot, while teammates Rusty Wallace and Brendan Gaughan lined up 17th and 32nd respectively.

Newman was chasing Kurt Busch for the lead on lap 262 when engine woes struck and forced Newman behind the wall for the remainder of the day.

Newman was recorded in the 33rd spot.

Rusty Wallace and Brendan Gaughan were both running at the checkered, Wallace finished 14th and Gaughan in the 30th position.

The American Speed Association National Tour returned to Kentucky Speedway for the second time this year for the BFGoodrich Tires 225.

Qualifying was also rained out for them on Friday and the field was set by the current championship points standings.

Current points leader and Ringers supporter Kevin Cywinski sat on the pole with Tim Sauter to his outside.

In the end, it was a Ringers podium with Mike Garvey surviving the caution-filled event and taking his fourth win of the year.

Butch Miller finished second and sophomore Reed Sorenson in third.

Other Ringers notables in the field were Kevin Cywinski, 10th; Peter Cozzolino, 11th; Rich Loch, 13th; Todd Kluever, 14th; Toby Porter, 15th; Brett Sontag, 16th; John Dalziel, 34th and Greg Stewart, 36th.

The ASA National Tour’s next race is the Aaron’s 99 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., October 14.
