BAKERSFIELD, California -- Burney has been doing the same thing many other NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division - Southwest Series drivers have been doing over the past six weeks; working, watching TV, doing honey-do's, waxing the race car, anything but racing. The Series last race was August 21st at Colorado National Speedway, being as how the Tucson Raceway Park event was rained out on September 18th. The action now turns to the one mile oval at Phoenix International Raceway for the running of the "JC's Glass 100" this Sunday afternoon.
The 24 year old W. Sacramento driver has done well at Phoenix. In the seven races he has run there, he has qualified in the top seven in all but one and has two Bud poles. His average finish has been tenth. In the early September race of last year, he qualified second and finished second.
With four races to go, the 2001 Series rookie of the year is currently third in the Series point standings, 117 points out of first and 92 out of second. He has put the Groeniger/HPSMechanical/ Tri-C/ Victory Circle Chassis 2004 #1 Monte Carlo in the top five six times and in the top ten seven times in the seasons first ten races, along with a win at Irwindale Speedway and three Bud poles.
Lamar, along with several other Southwest Series drivers, recently tested at the Phoenix track,
and as a result, he says, "We're ready to get back to some racing".![]()
