With the verdict still not out on whether the Tucson race will be rescheduled, Pettit racing turns its sights on Phoenix with momentum, and the points lead.
Pettit looked to have the car to beat early in the practice session in Tucson two weeks ago, before the event was cancelled due to rain. A favorite for the Prunedale native, Pettit had hopes of stretching out his points lead over 2001 series champion Craig Raudman. This year’s point’s race is as close as it has been in recent years, and Pettit Racing heads to Phoenix International Raceway (PIR) with its sights set on a career performance. In the first race of the season in January at PIR Pettit had his best finish ever at the one-mile track, finishing in 3rd. With a new body and a classic Pettit blue and yellow paint scheme, taking the checkered is on the minds of all that work hard for Jim Pettit Racing.
Pettit leads all drivers with three wins this season and 7 finishes in the top 5. Duane Sharpe, crew chief of the 03, stated in an article before the season that 2004 would be a great year for Pettit and he could not have been more correct. In his 4th season Pettit has already set high marks for wins, top 5’s, and top 10’s, with three races still remaining. As Sharpe stated early in the year the only thing left for Pettit is a championship. The 03’s performance this year has a lot of others that follow the series thinking the same thing.
This race will be the 12th race of the 14-race season. This will be the second of three events held at PIR for the AutoZone Southwest Series. Practice and qualifying will be held on Saturday the 2nd of October, with the race being held on Sunday the 3rd. Along with the AutoZone Southwest Series, the West Series will also be at PIR for the weekend.
Jim Pettit Racing would like to recognize California HotWood, DPI, LRP, and Top of The Hill Performance for their continued support of the team’s run for the championship. A special thanks goes out to the families, friends, and fans for their support. As always everyone is invited to meet Jim and the entire crew of 03 in the pit area during the race weekend.
