FONTANA, CaliforniaThiago Medeiros captured his seventh pole position of the season, earning the top spot for the California 100 at California Speedway.
Medeiros, who extended his series record for most poles in a season, recorded a lap of 37.9284 seconds, 189.831 mph, in the No. 11 Sam Schmidt Motorsports Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone.
Arie Luyendyk Jr. qualified second at 38.0030 seconds, 189.459 mph, while Paul Dana, 38.0780 seconds, 189.086 mph, was third.
The California 100 is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 2. It will be broadcast by ESPN2 at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 7.
Also on Oct. 1, Dan Wheldon led the opening day of practice for the IndyCar® Series Toyota Indy 400. Wheldon recorded a lap of 33.1453 seconds, 217.225 in the No. 26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone.
Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice, at 33.1875 seconds, 216.949 mph, and Helio Castroneves, at 33.2393 seconds, 216.611 mph, were second and third, respectively.
Qualifying for the Toyota Indy 400 is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 2.
