YAKIMA, Washington -- The first of the three day 2004 Fall Classic got under way on Friday night October 1 with first day qualifying for the Late Models and Sportsman Classes. The Mike Olson Dodge Race of Champions had a star studded field of racers.

The first day fast qualifier for the Late Model Division is Garrett Evans (East Wenatchee, WA) with a time of 18:561. Second quick is 2004 Yakima speedway Track Champion Erick Hargraves (Yakima, WA) with an 18:572 lap. Ken Kaltschmidt (Auburn, WA) and Mike Longton (Yakima, WA) were third and fourth quick respectively. Second day qualifying will be Saturday afternoon for the 100 lap main on Saturday night October 2.

Qualifying also took place for the Sportsman Division and fast qualifier is Erick Hargraves (Yakima, WA) at 20:284 and Steve Thompson Kennewick, WA) is second fast. Third is Kelly Mann (Monroe, WA) and fourth is Greg Kuhlman (Selah, WA).

The Fall Classic Annual Race Of Champions featured former and present Champions of the Classic and or at their respective home tracks or series. The Champions drew for a starting position. Cory Wolfe (Polson, MT) drew the number one chip. Garrett Evans (E. Wenatchee, WA) drew the second starting spot on the outside of the front row.

Evans led from the green until after a restart when John Zaretzke and Roger Habich got into each other as they battled for second. On the restart Jason Jefferson (Naches, WA) who started from the 12th position was able to get under Evans and led the rest of the 40-lap feature. Erick Hargraves (Yakima, WA) took second from a 16th starting position and third went to Jason Frazer (Snohomish, WA).

Jefferson took home the $2000.00 winners share and the first of a record purse for the 2004 Fall Classic. Jefferson said “I am after the $16,000.00 winners share of the Super Late Model 200 on Sunday October 3.

Saturday October 2 the qualifying gets under way at 12:00pm. Trophy Dashes and Heat Races follow qualifying. The 50-Lap Sportsman Main gets under way at approximately 5:00pm followed by the $6000.00 to the winner Late Model 100-Lap Main. The Front Gates open at 11:00am on Saturday and Sunday####
