LAKEVILLE, Connecticut Skip Barber Regional and National Championship stand-out John Edwards, 13, was chosen as the winner of the 2004 Red Bull Driver Search yesterday after being selected in the final round of judged competition held at the Autodromo Fernanda Pires Da Silva circuit in Estoril, Portugal.
Edwards impressed the Red Bull judges with his dedication and potential after two days of testing in Alan Docking Racing-prepared Formula 3 cars on the former Formula 1 race circuit. Edwards made auto racing history this past January at Daytona International Speedway in the Skip Barber Southern Race Series when, at the age of 12, he became the youngest ever driver to win an open-wheel road race.
This summer, Edwards competed in the professional Skip Barber National Championship Presented by RACER and finished seventh in the series, won by 17-year-old Marco Andretti, son of Michael.
As of yet there's been no word from Red Bull about which championship -- U.S. or Europe -- it plans to run Edwards in. He'll be 14 next March.
All the drivers currently funded by the Red Bull Driver Search program are Skip Barber Racing School and Skip Barber Race Series alumni.
Edwards on his way to the history making win at Daytona in January 2004. At 13, he's unlikely to get sponsorship from Gillette anytime soon…
