Coming off a very successful test last week at the high banked half mile in Bakersfield, California, Jim Pettit II and the crew of the HotWood 03 are prepared for a top finish at Mesa Marin Speedway, in the Ford Motorcraft 150.
This Saturday will be the 12th race of the 14- race season for the AutoZone Southwest Series teams. This will be the second and final time that the series will race at Mesa Marin Speedway in 2004. The last time the 03 car was at Mesa Marin Pettit started 3rd, and finished a strong 2nd. After last week’s test, the team is prepared to place one better this trip.
With more than 30 cars pre-registered for the event, Pettit II knows the significance of a solid run in this weekends event. Holding a slim 10 point margin over 2001 champion Craig Raudman the 03 crew knows that to win the championship they must maintain their consistency the rest of the way. Pettit has been in the chase for the last two years, finishing an impressive third both times. Pettit has never held the lead in points this late in the season, and he has no plans to give that lead away.
Starting 24th at Phoenix two weeks ago, Pettit put on a show for the fans passing 19 cars in the first 61 laps. Pettit won the PowerAde Move of the Race Award, notched is 8th top-5 finish, and maintained his lead in the points.
In the first eleven races Pettit has three wins, eight top-5’s, and nine top-10’s. The teams early success combined with Duane Sharpe’s strong work ethic, has attracted four new crewmembers to the team this year. The extra help in the shop has allowed the veteran crew chief to accomplish many tasks during the week that before had to be done on race-day. The team is hoping that the new members, combined with the experience of the old will result in three great finishes down the stretch for the HotWood 03.
Jim Pettit Racing would like to recognize California HotWood, DPI, LRP, and Top of the Hill Performance for their continued support. The team would like to also thank all of their family, friends, and fans. Everyone is reminded to come and meet Jim and the entire crew in the pits after the race at Mesa Marin this Saturday night. . .
