BAKERSFIELD, California -- Bakersfield’s Jeff Smith piloted his No. 12 Chevrolet Monte Carlo to a 17th place finish Sunday, October 17, 2004 after starting 27th in the “RacingWest.com 125,” the richest NASCAR Late Model event ever hosted by Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif. Forty-one Late Models vied for a starting spot in the premier event, a part of the 27th annual October Classic.
A regular contender on the 5-mile high-banked oval, Smith competes in the Late Model division with the help of crew members Craig, Al, brother Howard, and car owner Jim.
“We’re just a bunch of Okies who like to race,” said Smith. “We come out here to have fun and hopefully load it onto the trailer in one piece.”
The Smith Racing Team’s fun is supported by Burlington Homes and Smith and Sons Ranch, a small family-owned and operated business, specializing in quality pistachios.
The down-to-earth and friendly Late Model driver finished 15th in the
2004 Mesa Marin’s NASCAR Weekly Racing Series, Late Model division. Fans can cheer for him next season, as he plans to return to Mesa Marin for the 2005 season.
