It was another crazy night of racing at South Sound Speedway in Rochester that included new winners, repeat winners, a few crashes and one daring escape. The Late Model Super Stocks and North Star Yachts and Commercial Drivers Services Sportsman each had their first repeat winners of the season while the Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks and the Foreign Stock Car Racing Association (FSCRA) both had a new winner.

Joe Constance started off his Late Model Super Stock night qualifying fast for the class of 25 drivers. Devin Eierman and Billy Weber were set to start on the front row of the B main event but Weber’s car had a mechanical problem during the practice session that ended his night prematurely. Bob Presley was then set up on the outside of the front row of the B main. Eierman took the lead on lap one and held Presley off until lap nine. A caution was thrown on lap 11 when Paul Blake’s car took a wrong turn into the front stretch wall. Presley won the B main event with Devin Eierman in second. Both moved on to the A main event. Pat Schwartzkopf who was third was awarded the trophy. Donnie Steele was fourth and Jimmy Clair was fifth.

Brad Tanner and James Van Cleve made up the front row of the A main event. The pack stayed pretty close for the first couple laps but Van Cleve eventually pulled out front of Tanner for the lead. Ken Kaltschmidt moved into second and Tom Sweatman into third before the caution came out on lap nine. The caution was for Jason Hedrick who didn’t get going again after he got into Brad Stanwood, spinning them both. Before the second caution, on lap 17, Tom Sweatman had moved himself up to second position. The caution this time was for Bob Coffey spinning and then leaving the track. Van Cleve and Sweatman battled it out for many laps until Van Cleve got high in turn three and came down on Sweatman, spinning himself. The caution was thrown for him on lap 53. Sweatman now had the lead with Ken Kaltschmidt in second, Jim Wilcox in third and Nick Behn in fourth.

Tim Gosch left the track on lap 62 with a mechanical problem but that’s not where his race ended. Gosch lost brakes coming off the track and was unable to stop his car. Gosch missed a truck and trailer and went through the back fence and onto the street behind pit row. Gosch was found a few minutes later by the safety crew about three driveways down from the racetrack. Gosch was fine and surprisingly the car looked to be also. Meanwhile, on the track surface, Tom Sweatman had a huge lead over the field. Ken Kaltschmidt was running second until lap 90 when Jim Wilcox got around him. It only took Behn one more lap to get around Kaltschmidt. Tom Sweatman crossed the checkered lap first to win his second main event of the season. Jim Wilcox came across second. Nick Behn finished third, a great run, after two disappointing races this season. Brad Tanner was fourth and Joe Constance was fifth. Ken Kaltschmidt, Dan Obrist, James Van Cleve, Willy Thom and Dustin Wilkinson rounded out the top ten.

It was John Boyatt’s night in the North Star Yachts and Commercial Drivers Services Sportsman. First Boyatt tied for the fastest qualifying spot with Bradley Shaw. Both had a 14.896 second lap. Boyatt got the top position though because he qualified first. During the main event, Boyatt led the last half of the race to take the win, his second of the season. Mark Jones and Paul “Pappy” Welch started on the front row of the main event. Jones took the lead but Brandon Finch got past him on lap three. Lap four brought out the first caution of the race when Jones got into the wall. Shane Sawin had a tire go down so he exited the track and made it back out before the green flew. John Boyatt took the lead from Brandon Finch on lap 16. Bradley Shaw was running third with Pappy Welch in fourth. On lap 20 another caution came out when Shaw had mechanical problems and was unable to continue. Pat Clark left the track on lap 22 with a mechanical problem. Kelly Ensor brought out the next caution when he blew his rear end on lap 23 and got fluid all over the track. Pat Clark came back out during the caution and only lost one lap. John Boyatt won the main event with Brandon Finch in second and Shane Sawin in third. Paul “Pappy” Welch was fourth and rookie Tina McMillan was fifth with a great run. Jack Allen finished up sixth with Pat Clark in seventh and JD Barnum in eighth.

JJ Hamilton was the fastest of 21 qualifiers in the Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks. Kevin Boretsky led all eight laps of the C heat race to win with Sean Riley in second and Bill Manney in third. Bobby Micielli won the B heat race after taking the lead from Jim Moen on lap seven. Moen finished second with Mike Press in third. David Knittle led all eight laps of the A heat race for the win with Mike Saylors and Jim Swanson in tow. The main event was schedule for 35 laps with Cody Erskine and Bill Manney lined up on the front row. Erskine led the first lap before Manney got around him. Manney lost the lead on lap six to Bobby Micielli and a caution was thrown on the next lap. Jared Vorse spun coming out of turn four as Charles Meadors got into him. Then BJ Brown came out of turn four and lambasted the pair. All had to be towed off the track and none were able to continue. Lap 10 brought out the second caution when Jay Hopkins spun, then the red was thrown when Sean Riley had an engine fire again, for the second race in a row. The green flew for leader Bobby Micielli and Paul Hopkins but not for long. Lap 13 brought out the third caution when Mike Saylors spun Mike Brooks and then came around and hit Kevin Boretsky. Saylors got the black flag; his second for the race. Saylors got a black flag earlier for dumping Cody Erskine. On Lap 18 JJ Hamilton spun in turn two. Hamilton seemed to getting going and pulled up into the first and second grooves but then his car died. Bill Manney came around to avoid Hamilton and then Dave Knittle couldn’t avoid the mess and was also taken out. Manney and Knittle’s cars were pretty much destroyed and were unable to race anymore. Before another lap could be completed, the fifth and final caution came out for Jim Moen spinning. Bobby Micielli won the main event with Jim Swanson in second. Mike Press was third, Jordan McGregor fourth and Paul Hopkins was fifth. Jay Hopkins, JJ Hamilton, Cody Erskine, Ron Ehli and Kevin Boretsky were the rest of the top ten.

John Grosvenor was the fast qualifier in the Foreign Stock Car Racing Association (FSCRA). Scott Peal won the B heat race over Red Van Dyne and Eric Kaas. Dan Hale won the A heat race with Dave Powell in a close second and Wayne Dillon in third. Van Dyne led the first three laps of the main event after starting on the pole. Jerry Koepping took over on lap four moving Van Dyne to second and Dan Hale to third. The only caution of the race came on lap seven when Wayne Dillon and Bryan Grant got together and hit the turn one wall very hard. Both drivers were fine but their cars were another story. The top three stayed the same until lap 17 when Matt Melby snuck into third place and then took second on lap 22. Melby tried hard to get around Koepping but he just couldn’t do it. Koepping won his first main event of the season with Melby in second and Van Dyne in third. Dan Hale was fourth and Dave Powell was fifth. Richard Dionne was sixth, David Callander was seventh, Lee Murray finished eighth, Eric Kaas was ninth and Andrew Caddell was tenth.

Next Saturday night at South Sound Speedway will see the Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks back out again after being added to the schedule. The Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks will make their comeback after being rained out five of seven scheduled races. The 360 Wingless Sprints, Modifieds and Mini Cup Open Division & Future Stars will also be on the docket. Racing will begin at 6:30 pm with qualifying at 5:00 pm.
