Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s importance to the NASCAR Nextel Cup tour was recognized again Monday when NASCAR announced that the 1.5-mile superspeedway is one of seven tracks selected for an official test session in 2007.

It will be the first time the stars of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series will get to race on the 20-degree banked racing surface.

The LVMS test will be held Jan. 29 and 30 with a rain date of Jan. 31. “We are looking forward to having the world’s best drivers out here in January to test this new speedway,” said LVMS general manager Chris Powell. “We just completed a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race that saw very close racing and faster speeds. We’re exciting to see what the Nextel Cup cars can do.”

Kurt Busch and Jeremy Mayfield are the only Nextel Cup drivers to take any laps around the speedway since the banking was raised from 12 to 20 degrees in the turns. Busch made several passes in a Richard Petty Driving Experience car in early August and Mayfield competed in Saturday night’s Smith’s Las Vegas 350 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race.

“I love the race track, and am really looking forward to getting out here in a Cup car,” Mayfield said. “It’s really fast and by the time we get back here next year, there should be several racing grooves to choose from.”

Other tracks to host test sessions are Daytona, Bristol, Richmond, Lowe’s, Dover and Talladega. “NASCAR received input and recommendations from each of the crew chiefs that was valuable to our decision making process,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president for competition. “The seven tracks that were selected provide the teams with a wide variety of layouts, surfaces, and track characteristics that should provide them with an opportunity to have success in 2007.”

Tickets for the March 9-11, 2007 NASCAR Weekend are on sale by calling 1-800-644-4444 or logging on to www.lvms.com. Race fans also can purchase tickets to the new Neon Garage as well as pit passes, pre-race activities passes and Lucky 7 preferred parking passes####
