MADERA, California -- Talk about going out in a blaze of glory. That literally was the case for Madera Late Model driver Dallas Glenn Saturday at Madera Speedway in the Halloween 100 Showdown. After winning the 100-lap Late Model “Halloween 100” feature, Glenn did a victory burnout that caused flames to spurt out from underneath the hood of his race car, calling on Speedway officials to pull Glenn out of the burning car and extinguish the flames. In Glenn’s eyes, the fire couldn’t sour the mood for him as it was a long time coming. ”It was all worth it,” Glenn said. Glenn led for all 100 laps, though he was constantly being hounded by current track champion Rick Thompson, and 2005 track champion, Justin Westmoreland. “There was a lot of cautions and that made it real tough, there’s so many fast cars like with Justin being here and obviously Rick Thompson who is extremely fast,” Glenn said. “Their both ultra fast cars.” Glenn won despite racing in a car that had a lot of wear and tear on it from a previous race. “These tires came from Altamont, we had 120 laps when we got here today,” Glenn said. “We didn’t come here to win the race, we came here to test the car out a little bit to see how everything worked.” Glenn began the season with an opening day win on April 22 but it’s been a hardship ever since. “It’s been a rough year,” Glenn said. “We’ve spent close to $70,000 on motors this year.” He did use an old reliable for Saturday’s race. “We’re back on our old stand-by, the sealed craned engine,” Glenn said. “It’s $5200 and it always runs, so it did the job for us.” While Glenn won, Westmoreland came in second. He had trailed Thompson at the beginning of the race. On lap 38, Westmoreland caught up to Thompson and had taken the lead on lap 60. On lap 68, Thompson and Westmoreland flip-flopped, leaving Westmoreland in third. With 25 laps to go, Westmoreland passed Thompson for good and left him to finish in third.

In spirit of the season, Halloween Express of Clovis sponsored a costume contest. Race fans came out in their ghoulish gear to compete in a costume contest for prizes. Smart & Final supported a “Trick or Treat” autograph session. Over twenty pounds of candy was offered to fans of all ages as autographs were offered for the final time this season.

In the other races of the night, Donny Darter won the 75-lap Street Stock “Spooky 75” feature. Don Smith won the 30-lap Toyota Sedans race, while Chris Smith won the 30-lap Modified Stock Toyota race. Miles Humphries won his second straight Hornet race. The Madera Speedway officials also got to race with Dave Boyko, of D & K Towing, winning the 10-lap race and chief steward, Robert Ascencio coming in second. Ascenio won the race last season but ran into the wall where he wasn’t expecting quite the impact he felt. “I thought I was just going to nic the wall,” he said. Aside from the hit, Ascencio enjoyed his trip around the track. “What a blast that was,” he said.

Madera Speedway completed its final race of 2006 and the speedway’s future remains unknown.

The Speedway will honor their competitors during an awards banquet on Saturday, November 11th.
