ESPN broadcasters Joe Theismann and Suzy Kolber tried their hand with NASCAR at Lowe's Motor Speedway Saturday night. The pair participated in the Richard Petty Driving Experience and got a close-up look at what motorsports has to offer. Theismann took the wheel for 8 laps inside an authentic NASCAR style stock car built by Richard Petty Driving Experience. Kolber got her thrills by riding shotgun with an instructor for 3 laps around the 1.5 mile speedway reaching speeds up to 170 mph. Rain showers came into the area and washed out the night before they could make the switch over with Kolber driving and Theismann making hot laps but both left with a new appreciation for what stock car racing has to offer.

"That was simply awesome", said Kolber as she exited from the passenger side of the #10 Valvoline car. "I can not imagine how those guys do that for 3 hours with 42 other cars out there nose to tail. The G's they pull are incredible. It really was the thrill of a lifetime", added Kolber, who handles the sidelines on MNF telecasts and has been with ESPN since 1993. "I am so glad I got the chance to do this and I can't thank the Richard Petty folks enough for the opportunity."

Theismann, who spent 12 years in the NFL and now serves as an analyst for MNF, came away admiring the skill and focus needed to pilot these 600hp NASCAR style stock cars at top speeds. "The amount of concentration and hand eye coordination needed to do that for any length of time is off the chart. I was so in tune with the car in front of me, I sort of had tunnel vision. I started to get more comfortable as the laps went by but to do that for 500 miles is hard to fathom", said Theismann. And this former NFL great put an old myth to rest when he added, "And yes, the NASCAR drivers are truly athletes in every sense of the word."

Theismann and Kolber will be part of ESPN's Monday Night Football coverage from Bank of America stadium as the Carolina Panthers host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Game time is set for 8:30pm EST on ESPN.####
