HE SAID, HE SAID

One guy says he wants a race date; the other guy says he doesn’t. It appears the reader has been pushed into the unfortunate situation of deciding who is telling the truth.

Steve Fensler, owner of the SRL, has stated he wants a race date for his series at Altamont Motorsports Park and has tried without success to secure one.

Kenny Shepherd, promoter of AMP, via an extensive post on an Internet message board stated, “The SRL has not been in contact with us about dates at AMP, we have had no conversation with them. I assume there is no request for dates?”

Shepherd ends his prolonged post with a warning advising under no uncertain terms that he, Shepherd, will control the content, “I know some of you will take shots at me, but I would ask you call me instead, as I will not respond or post a reply.”

Fensler probably will not be responding to the allegations in the post via the message board, anyway. It is not his style. He is accustomed to addressing the public via professionally written press releases and at event meetings.

So how will the public or you, the reader, know who is telling the whole story and being honest?

The facts are ready to be told by Fensler’s phone records which document the truth to what he says.

What is the real shame here is that this is being discussed at all. Why didn’t Shepherd simply tell Fensler he didn’t want a date?

Perhaps Shepherd was concerned public opinion would turn on him. Maybe he has plans to start his own series, maybe he has a dislike of Fensler, but why not do the decent thing, tell the man, "sorry you don’t have a date…move on"?

Instead Shepherd tried to turn the fact that he didn’t want to give Fensler a date to being Fensler’s fault. The last thing Fensler needs at this time is to be fighting mendacity and lies. He needs dates for his series. He has the burden of not only giving the SRL drivers a schedule, but feels the need to help the displaced NASCAR SW Tour drivers. There is little Fensler won’t do to assist those drivers.

Fensler has publicly said, “I would give the SRL away if I knew these drivers would be better served.” A man ready to give away his dream and all he has built for the sake of the drivers that support it.

He isn’t a liar. He has no need to lie.

Fensler is one of the few people in motorsports that doesn’t have an agenda, isn’t out trying to make a fortune, is truly doing what he does because he loves the sport, and more importantly -- every single person in the sport.

For all the untruths that Shepherd said, Fensler will still not utter a bad word against him. He just doesn’t understand the games being played...either do I.

Do you?

UPDATE 12/22/06:

I received a note from Steve Fensler late last night. He let the words spill from his heart. In only a few short lines, his words speak louder than the pages and pages of words that anyone else may write.

He said, “Words cannot express the sorrow that I feel for such a fantastic group of racers I have had the pleasure to work for in the past 6 years. I am still going to continue to try and make somewhat of a season for these great competitors. What will happen at this point I cannot even speculate, but I also cannot give up!

“...I will try and sleep on the activities of today and maybe tomorrow will bring some more understanding to me as to why this has happened.…”

After reading his words I had a tough time sleeping. Here is one man trying to do the right thing for so many.... and he is struggling ...and I feel his struggle and want to help. We all need to chip in and do the "right thing". Let’s not waste our energy on those who tell untruths. We need to take action and support a man who's always been there for us. The time is now for us to help our friend.

There is no time like the present to control our future, to get started moving forward toward what can be our success.####
