FIGURE 8 EXHIBITION WILL BE A HIGHLIGHT OF ORANGE SHOW SPEEDWAY WINTER SERIES FINALEORANGE SHOW SPEEDWAY
Source: Jim Short
Stock Cars USA, Legends Cars, Bandoleros and the Mini and Jr. Mini StocKars will provide the racing on the quarter-mile paved oval at the National Orange Show Events Center. It will be the fourth appearance of the winter for Stock Cars USA and the second for the other divisions.
Spectator gates will open at noon and racing is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Tickets are priced at $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (62 and older), military personnel and juniors (13-16) and $2 for children (6-12). Parking is free through Gate 1, off E Street, or Gate 7, off Arrowhead Avenue.
Stock Cars USA have run four main events this winter – single races Dec. 17 and Jan. 7 and a doubleheader on Dec. 3 that served as the regular season finale for the class – and there have been four different winners. There has been a trend, however. Teammates John Mattie and Brian Malone won the Dec. 3 races. Teammates, and family members, Jimmy Rouse Jr. and step-mother Michelle Rouse won the events on Dec. 17 and Jan. 7, respectively.
The Dec. 17 race was the first in a full-sized race car for Rouse Jr., 14, of San Bernardino, who had been racing Bandoleros. That division now is home to promising youngster Ben Mahan, 11, of Hesperia, who swept the eight-race Jr. Mini StocKar season and won the Bandoleros main at Orange Show Speedway Dec. 17.
Each of the divisions will run a Trophy Dash, heat races and a main event, and the Outlaws will provide a break from the oval track racing by making their debut on a course laid out in the newly-paved infield.
Multi-time Figure 8 champion Rod Proctor, of Riverside, has told track officials that he and some of his friends will be on hand to give fans a preview look at the sort of close-quarter, exciting racing that will be on display on a regular basis when the 2007 season opens March 3.
On Saturday, Jan. 20, Orange Show Speedway hosted its annual awards banquet. “Papa John” Brady, a Pony Stock racer and track chaplain, was given the Stephen Teel Sportsman of the Year Award for his service to the track, Sport Truck driver Ed Reid was given the Ray Walker Jr. Award in recognition of his commitment to the sport, and Gary Stockman, who was instrumental in organizing the Hornaday 100 Super Late Model race, was the speedway’s Person of the Year.
Glen Cummings (Super Late Model), Mike Jackson (Modified), Jim Conklin (Late Model), Don Minut (Pro 4), Johnny Russo (Street Stock), Jim Mardis (Pony Stock), Jim Edmiston (Sport Trucks), Jim Holland (Sport Compacts), Dean Caskey (Mini StocKar) and Ben Mahan (Jr. Mini StocKar) were recognized as class champions.
Rookies of the year were Brian FitzGibbons (Super Late Model), Jason Patison (Modifieds), Ryan Daniel (Late Model), Kyle McGrady (Pro 4), Bobby Dezarov (Street Stock), Joe Perez Jr. (Pony Stock), Butch Reid (Sport Trucks), Gerritt Hodge (Sport Compacts), Steven Remly (Mini StocKar) and Joey McKeag (Jr. Mini StocKar).
Racing at Orange Show Speedway is sponsored by Leno’s Rico Taco, Blackhawk Protection, Golden West Tire, Lucas Oil, Soboba Casino, Budweiser, Sunoco Racing Fuel, Hoosier Racing Tires, Center Chevrolet, Pick A Part, Neff Rental, Pepsi, Loma Linda University Medical Center, J&M Trophy, Matich Corp., Lazer Radio (101.7 and 105.7 FM), La Salle Medical Associates, California Highway Patrol, KCAL radio (96.7 FM) and the San Bernardino County Sun newspaper.
