RC WHITWELL ON TOP AT CANYON OPENER

2006 Barnett Modified runner up RC Whitwell took the main event Saturday at the “New” Canyon Raceway in Peoria, AZ. Whitwell scored a win in the first heat race which started him on the pole for the 30 lap main event. Slowed numerous times for cautions the Barnett Modifieds put on a great show with several drivers taking different lines around the 3/8 mile oval. At the end though it was Whitwell with a flag to flag victory and the $1000 winners check. In other heat race action El Paso’s Christy Georges took the second heat race. Long tow Marlyn Seidler won the third heat and Tucson’s Paul Banghart was the fourth heat race winner. Two semi mains were won by Jim Collinsworth and Terry Belcher Jr. Rounding out the top five in the A-main were Whitwell, Marlyn Seidler, Jason Noll, Darren Williams and Christy Georges. Thirty eight Barnett Modifieds signed in to race.

In the Pure Stock class young Matt Martinez continued right where he left off last season with a win in his heat race and a main event win. The other heat was won by Ty Weidner. Top five in the Pure Stock main were Matt Martinez, Marlowe Wrightsman, Jacob Rohde, Stacy Mecl and Rob Chevallier.

Super Stocks had three heat races with Ron Funk, Buck Brigner and Lonnie Foss taking the preliminaries. The hard fought main event was won on the final circuit by Funk. Following him to the line were Joe Weigman, Corey Hemphill, Gene Freeman and Doug Porter.

Racing resumes next Saturday at the “Diamond in the Desert” with the Barnett Modifieds, Super Stocks, Pure Stocks and Desert Dwarf Cars. Gates open at 10 am with racing at 1 pm. For info call 602-258-RACE (7223) or visit www.canyonraceway.net
