ASA SPEED TRUCK CHALLENGE GOES ROAD COURSE RACINGUpland, CA -- “This is why we make such a difference in the professional future abilities of our drivers,” said president of the ASA Speed Truck Challenge (ASA STC) in its corporate offices this morning. “As a traveling series, one of the primary premises of our program is to put our drivers on eight very different tracks in three states, including tough road courses like Firebird International Raceway and California Speedway, as well as challenging oval tracks from 1/4 to 3/8 to 1/2 miles in California, Arizona and Nevada. This has given our drivers a complete resume of race track and driving diversity,” continued Rutherford.

Having just finished the fourth race of what is proving to be a wild shootout for the championship, with four different winners in as many events so far, the ASA STC will be charging into Chandler, Arizona with a full compliment of drivers hungry for a good showing and point’s recognition. The obvious favorites for the road course terrain and those who have done extremely well in the past are: Victor Pfluger #80, winning at the Saint John’s Grand Prix at only 14 years of age and now at 16, is a Tucson Raceway Park winner, the current points leader and has the fast qualifying times in the first four races; Darren Young #18, a two-time ASA STC champion who loves the road course; Jim Putman #12, who is having an excellent season so far with one win and brings lots of experience to this type track and led many laps at last years race; and Randel King, also a teenager with a win already this season at the Orange Show Speedway and is extremely anxious to pick up a road course victory. But look out, here comes ’05 series champion Lee Hatch in the #91 Speed Truck that edged out Scott Dodd last year at this Firebird event and Hatch has many road course victories in an array of racing vehicles. And other road course aces in the #84 and #34 Speed Trucks are Paul Bonaccorsi and Steve Paulauskis. This race could be very interesting.

“It’s a totally different set-up,” says ’06 series champion Darren Young. “Our team knows that we have to really be on top of our game for us to be competitive. Personally, coming off an injury, I’ll have to work very hard against such tough competition. I’ll definitely be ready for it however,” he laughed.

Rutherford states, “I am extremely proud of all of our teams that are working so hard to be competitive. The road courses at Firebird and California Speedway are back-to-back for a reason; to help the teams with their set-ups and save costs of switching the Speed Trucks from oval track to road course racing; however, it will take a totally different set of skills to win at Firebird and California. We always look forward to seeing who brings their “A-Game”,” he concluded.

The course itself was created in 1983 by Charlie Allen, Dick Scott and Bill Guptill with the idea of having the most diverse and exciting motor sports facility in the world. Since that time more than a million visitors have passed through the gates of Firebird International Raceway each year located in Chandler, Arizona. The facility is home to more than 25 events each year including: NHRA Checker Schuck’s Kragen National Drag Races, IHBA Coors Light World Finals Speed Boat Races, All Harley Drag Races and Santa’s World. Located in Chandler off of I-10 and Wild Horse Pass. For more information call 602.268.0200 or online at www.firebirdraceway.com.

The Firebird International Raceway event will be filmed for national broadcast at a later date.
