CUMMINGS MAKES IT TWO IN A ROW AT ORANGE SHOW SPEEDWAYSource: js
Cummings started on the outside of the front row for the 40-lap main event, took the lead from pole-sitter Charles Price with nine laps of the quarter-mile oval remaining and pulled away over the final eight laps for career win number 91 in his E.J. Meyer/Stickshift Transmissions Pontiac Grand Prix.
The front-row starters managed to pull away in the opening laps and quickly made it clear to the crowd of 800 that one of them would be the winner. Cummings said he wasn’t sure it would be him, though, until Price was forced to pit with a broken right front wheel. That gave Cummings a lead that never was threatened at the finish.
“He was running good,” Cummings said of Price. “I don’t know if I could have caught him or not. There’s not too many times you’ll win two in a row anymore, the competition is so good and the qualifying times are so close.”
Mark Shackleford started seventh and wound up second, the best finish of the season for the 2004 class champion, and current points leader Rick Chavez was third. Price returned to the track after replacing the front wheel and finished 13th.
In other races, Eddie Secord rolled to his third win in four starts in the Pro 4 class, Tony Dumont took the Aflac Factory Fours main, Mark Whitson took his third win in as many races for the Stock Cars USA series and 11-year-old Benjamin Mahan won for the third time this year and the 11th time in a row overall in the Jr. Mini StocKar class.
Secord started his Fiesta Village Pontiac fifth in the 12-car Pro 4 field for the 30-lap main, became the race’s fourth leader on lap 10, and held off Bryan Glidewell in a 5-lap sprint to the finish after a caution flag on lap 25. Secord won the opening race March 10 and has won two in a row after being forced to sit out the second race because of a broken clutch fork.
Dumont took the lead for good in the 25-lap Factory Fours main with five laps to go and held off Spencer Samaro in a green-white-checkered finish after the third caution flag, and Whitson came from sixth at the start of that 25-lap feature to take the lead with three laps to go.
