ANOTHER GREAT CARROLL CLASSIC AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAYALGER, Washington -- Annually Skagit Speedway hosts the John Carroll Classic on Memorial Weekend. This year taking home the prestigious Carroll Classic Cups were Brock Lemley in the 410 Sprints, Travis Jacobson in the Budweiser 360 Sprints, Kelleigh Johnson in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints and Chris Erickson in the Wilson Auto Broker Outlaw Hornets.

In 2005 Barry Martinez dominated 410 sprint action at Skagit Speedway, setting many fast times and winning the track championship. Martinez set his second fast time of the season Saturday night with an 11.944 lap in time trials. Winning the heat races were Brock Lemley and Jared Ridge. Steve Kilcup got off to a great start winning the battle into turn one on the start and leading the first four laps. Seemingly from out of nowhere, running the top in turns 3 and 4, and running the bottom in turns 1 and 2 Lemley came sailing by. Lemley kept the lead finishing in front of the 25-lap main ahead of Danny Bullock, Jared Ridge, Kilcup and John Tharp to the checkered flag. It was the second straight win in the 410 division for Lemley who looks to take over the point lead from Jayme Barnes who was not at the track this weekend. Martinez had a midrace 360 in the bottom of turn 4. He kept going but lost a lot of ground to the leader and would finish sixth.

Budweiser 360 point leader Jason Bloodgood came into the night winner of three straight main events was looking for a fourth from his inside row two starting position. At the drop of the green flag, Bloodgood and defending 360 champion Steve Kilcup set sail working on Travis Jacobson in his third race in the Roger Oudman #7o car. Jacobson; using his front row starting position to take the early lead, held off repeated charges from Bloodgood and Kilcup in leading all 25 laps and take home the Carroll Classic win. For Jacobson the win was doubly sweet as John Carroll gave Travis his first ever ride in a full size Sprint Car. Lemley was fourth and Cory Chamberlain was fifth. Kilcup and Brian Kirkpatrick won the heat races. Greg Sanquist set fast time for the 360 sprints with a 12.286 time trial lap.

Last week Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprint driver Kelleigh Johnson led the first 18 laps of the main event before getting caught behind lapped traffic. Johnson made sure that didn’t happen two weeks in-a-row as he led all 20 laps winning his first ever Sportsman Sprint main. Johnson held off rookie Devon Madonia for the win, with fellow rookie Matt Vandersys third, Eric Fisher fourth and defending champion and point leader Kevin Smith fifth. Smith battled an ill-handling car after a second lap incident involving three other cars, Fisher, Todd Rork and Martin Koetje. Winning heat races were Smith and Marc Schutte. Schutte winning his first ever heat race.

Thirty-three Wilson Auto Brokers Outlaw Hornets graced the Skagit Speedway pit area. Heat race wins went to class sponsor Luther Wilson and his employee Jesse Eldridge. The main event was a wild affair with 32 of the 33 cars making the green flag. Wilson led the first two laps, before yielding the top spot to Eldridge. Eldridge held on until lap ten, when James “Little Bandito” Bundy went for a wild ride flipping down the front stretch in his Mustang. After the red flag, Eldridge couldn’t light the fire in his 6% machine and the lead was inherited by Chris Erickson. Erickson led the final 7 laps for his third win in 6 races this season. Rounding out the top five finishers were Rod Helmuth, Wendy Johnson, Greg Hibma from 18th starting position, and Wilson.

On Friday night at Willamette Speedway, Enumclaw, Washington racer Henry Van Dam was badly injured. During intermission, Skagit Speedway drivers from all three sprint divisions and the Outlaw Hornets went into the grandstands with their helmets and raised over 2600.00 from the crowd. Skagit Speedway track owner Steve Beitler added more money, donating $3,000.00 to help Henry and his family in his recovery. Skagit Speedway, it’s fans and drivers wish Henry a speedy recovery.

During opening ceremonies, John Carroll was honored, and memorial laps were run for Al and Mona Tesch, Fred Boettner, Glen Parsons, Al Van Dyke, Rob Kazner, Bob Anderson, and Jim Schermerhorn. Rod Perkins, Barry Martinez, Dan Pierson and Jared Peterson were the flag bearers. These were all folks involved with Skagit Speedway that passed away since last Labor Day.

Just two races remain before the 36th annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup presented by Foley’s RV and Camping World June 14-16 at Skagit Speedway. All four divisions return next Saturday night June 2nd with points races tightening. Spectator gates open at 6:00 p.m. with racing starting at 7:30 p.m. More details are available at www.SkagitSpeedway.com .
