DOUGLAS COUNTY SPEEDWAY, ASA MEMBER TRACK

The Independence driver started outside on the front row of the 15-car field and diligently waited for leader and pole-sitter Rick Anderson to make a mistake. On Lap 15, Potter’s patience paid off, as Anderson mishandled a turn and allowed Potter to surge ahead and assume the lead.
“We definitely were fortunate that Rick (Anderson) got loose,” Potter said. “He had the better car, but thankfully I was there and able drive past him at the moment.”
Anderson, of Azalea, went on to finish second. Riddle’s Greg Saily was third, Salem’s Rod Taguchi was fourth and Eagle Point’s Stuart Campbell was fifth. Saily won the Modified fast heat. Anderson won the second heat and Ross Payant took the first heat. Taguchi captured the trophy dash and Medford’s Ken Scales won the time trials.
Fast-qualifier Rob Mueller sped past pole-sitter Nick Hanson on Lap 8 before cruising to an easy win in the Pepsi Mini Stock class.
Mueller dominated his division. In addition to his main win and fast-time award, the Roseburg racer also won the fast heat and finished second in the trophy dash to Sutherlin’s Dale Yarbrough. Hanson, Tyson Eaton, Yarbrough and Rich Dickenson finished second through fifth respectively in the main. Dickenson won the second heat and rookie Dena Yarbrough, won the first heat.
Winchester’s Ray Douglas improved from last week’s second place main finish by racing to victory in the Ltd. Sprint main Saturday night. Douglas topped a short field of five cars through 20 laps. Matt Hein won the heat and timed in the fastest of the class. Vern Scevers captured the trophy dash.
Clint Hatfield won for the second time in three J-Car main events this season. Hatfield, who has been atop the point standing all season, was one of three cars to remain running during the full-contact race. Oakland’s Nick Cornilson was the fast qualifier and also won the trophy dash.
Oakland’s James Jobe also recorded his second main win of the early season in the Hornet class.
The field of nine Hornets raced down the front stretch then turned left to the infield and drove through a watered-down, makeshift chicane. Drivers then exited the infield into Turn 4 and repeated the circuit for 12 laps.
Jobe, one of three family members competing in the Taco Bell Hornet class, leads the class point standings. Ben Herbert Jr., a 14-year-old rookie, won his respective heat race. The young Oakland driver is currently second in the points race. Ben Herbert Sr won the other heat and has tallied the most points over the past two race nights.
Racing resumes Saturday at the Douglas County Speedway featuring the ARCA West Latemodel Challenge Series in town to compete in the Elmers Restaurant 125. Also on the race card are the ASA Latemodels, Pepsi Mini Stocks, Taco Bell Hornets and Tuff Trucks.
