DENVER, Colorado --Amidst a caution plagued night of racing at Colorado National Speedway for the evening’s “Race To Find Missing Kids”, Darren Robertson of Arvada, CO manages yet another top-five finish while maintaining a strong hold on the Late Model point standings.
Withstanding blistering daytime track temperatures at the 3/8 mile paved oval just North of Denver, the Robertson Racing crew set up the # 11 Monte Carlo for both a solid qualifying run as well as a race set-up that would adjust once the sun went down. Darren placed fourth in qualifying of the fifteen Late Models on hand, just a few hundredths behind quick time driver for the evening, the # 31 Rick Smith, of Gering, NE.
Racing in the second B-Main qualifying event for the night, Robertson started on the outside of the third row. The # 11 began working both the high and low lines of the track swiftly moving his way up through the field. With a couple circuits left to the checkered flag, Darren pulled to and held a comfortable lead at the stripe over second and third place finishers, the # 27 of Roger Avants of Littleton and # 70 of John Luck of Colo. Springs.
After some exciting racing in the Figure-Eight division, followed by the open wheeled Super Modifieds, Sprints, and Grand American Modifieds, it was time for the scheduled 40-Lap Late Model Feature Event. Positioned again outside the third row, the 21-year old Robertson and field were led to the green flag by pole-sitter # 26 Brian Pacheco of Elizabeth, CO. A massive multi-car pile-up in the third turn of the first lap almost proved to end Robertson’s evening early. Of the fifteen original starters, seven cars were involved in the wreck. Darren sustained minor damage and was able to briefly pull into the pits, where the crew made repairs and put the # 11 Chevrolet back onto the track before the race was re-started. Because of his brief pit-stop, Robertson was then forced to start at the rear of the 9 cars that were able to continue. Due to time constraints, the speedway was also forced to shorten the event to a 25-lap contest. Within the first ten laps, Robertson quickly moved up to the fifth spot, but had nearly a full straightaway distance to make up in order catch the front four of the field. Digging in hard and racing a steady line, Darren caught the front four with just five circuits remaining. Taking the outside line around the # 42 of Ronnie Hults, Darren Robertson finished in the fourth position. The # 31 of Smith took the checkered flag at lap-25, followed in tight formation by the # 27 of Avants and # 12 of Bruce Yackey of Greeley, CO.
With this hard-fought top-five finish, Robertson is able to hang on to his point lead in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series premier division at CNS and is looking for a stronger finish yet in next weeks “Auto Trader Mid-Season Championships” 100-Lap Feature Event.
