SMITH HAS FIGURE 8’S FIGURED OUT AT ORANGE SHOW SPEEDWAYSAN BERNARDINO, California -- When Orange Show Speedway announced the return of Figure 8 racing last winter, Tom Smith was one of the first to sign up.

Now, with the 15-race Lucas Oil Outlaw Figure 8 season reaching the halfway point Saturday night (June 30), it seems that what Smith really signed was a deed of ownership of the course that bisects the speedway infield.

Seven races have been run and Smith has won all of them. He’s also been the fast qualifier four times and won five heat races and a pair of trophy dashes while building a 32-point lead over Rusty Stewart in the standings.

Smith, 32, of Lakewood, is bidding for his second championship in as many seasons and his sixth overall in 25 years of racing. Smith, who makes his living as a mechanic, won six of nine races and the title at Irwindale Speedway last year. He is not racing there this season, having chosen to concentrate on Orange Show Speedway.

His quest for win No. 8 in this weekend’s 30-lap main event will be one of the highlights of a program that also features the BSR West Late Models, ASA Stock Ponys, Street Stocks and Leno’s Rico Taco Legends Cars.

Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. and racing gets under way at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (62 and over), handicapped and Juniors (13-16), and $2 for children (6-12). Active military personnel and veterans with valid military identification are admitted free of charge. Parking is $4 per car with entry through Gate 3 off Mill Street.

Saturday also is the final time that members of the California Department of Forestry (CDF) and California Department of Corrections (CDC) who present their badges at the ticket office can receive up to four free tickets, courtesy of Orange Show Speedway management.

Smith isn’t the only driver carrying a winning streak into this weekend’s action. ASA Stock Pony points leader Jim Edmiston, of Highland, will be after his third straight victory and his sixth in eighth races. Edmiston, the 2005 class champion, has a 34-point lead over Matt Goodwin.

BSR West Late Model leader Jim Conklin won that division’s most recent race, a caution-free 35-lap main event on June 9, and will be after his fourth win of the year while Bree Brewer, of Riverside, and Darren Amidon, of Santee, resume their battle for the Leno’s Rico Tacos Legends Cars title. Rosamond’s John Reiman, Highland’s Kyle Meyer and Cliff Conklin, of Big Bear, will try to become the first repeat winner in the Street Stock class.

National Orange Show officials have cancelled the July 4 Fireworks show and the speedway will not have racing next week. The next event is July 14.

Racing at Orange Show Speedway is sponsored by Lucas Oil, Blackhawk Protection, Hype Manufacturing, Del Taco, Aflac Insurance, KTTD radio (AM 1350), Leno’s Rico Taco, Star Auto Parts, Soboba Casino, Budweiser, Hoosier Racing Tires, Frank’s Radio Service, Torco Racing Fuels, Parker Pumper/BSR West, Eibach Springs, JP Striping, Center Chevrolet, Pepsi, Matich Coporation, L. Curti Truck and Equipment, One Stop Landscape Supply, Extreme Exhibits & Logistics, Little Green Onions and the San Bernardino County Sun.####
