LINNY WHITE WINS RICH SUPER LATE MODEL FEATURE, GAY TAKES MODIFIED WIN AT ORANGE SHOW SPEEDWAYORANGE SHOW SPEEDWAY
Source: OSS Media Relations
He proved that decisively Saturday night by taking home the Hype Manufacturing Super Late Model main event and the $1,000 winner’s purse.
Then he joined a crowd of 5,828 in watching Danny Gay of San Diego capture a wild Lucas Oil ASA Modified main event that set the stage for the curtain-closing Demoliton Derby won by Felix Ortiz.
Eddie Secord, of Oak Hills, and Tony Dumont, of Irvine, were the night’s other winners, in the ASA Pro 4 and Aflac Factory Four features, respectively.
The crowd was the largest for the track at the National Orange Show Events Center since Joe Ganino Jr. was named Director of Racing in June of last year, and those in attendance were treated to an extremely competitive night of racing.
White, 29, of Fontana, bested a field of 20 Super Late Models by taking the lead from Ramona’s John Manke on the 17th of 40 laps and holding it the rest of the way.
White, who also set fast time and won one of the three heat races, started his Chevrolet Monte Carlo on the outside of the front row, alongside Manke and just ahead of class points leader Rick Chavez. Those three set the pace throughout the early portion of a race plagued by six yellow caution flags and two red flag stops.
Frankie Gould moved into second on lap 20, but never challenged for the lead en route to a runner-up finish.
Gay, who started third in the 22-car field, said after the race that he thought he might have broken a rear end during one of the incidents that forced two restarts before a lap could be completed and eliminated points leader Jason Patison from contention. But if Gay did have a problem, it wasn’t evident. He dogged leader Tim Morse until Morse made contact with a lapped car and broke on lap 27, then withstood almost constant pressure from Jimmy Dickerson, of El Cajon, for the rest of the 75 laps.
It wasn’t all good news, however, because before the races began Ganino announced two more disciplinary actions stemming from last week’s controversial Late Model race and its aftermath.
Ron Daniel, who was spotting for driver Kevin James, has been suspended for a year under Orange Show Speedway Rule 6-1.3 (5), which prohibits any physical contact with a track official or another competitor. James has been fined $1,000 under Rule 6-1.1, which holds the driver responsible for the actions of his crew. In addition, Cliff Conklin, the crew chief and spotter for older brother Jim Conklin, has been placed on probation for the rest of the season under Rule 6-1.3, actions detrimental to the sport, and Jim Conklin has been fined $50 under Rule 6-1.1.
The suspension is retroactive to July 14.
