SAN DIEGO, California– Roaring laughter could be heard as the no. 212 Toyota Protruck crossed the finish line at the top of Pikes Peak. Austin Cameron and co-driver Larry Collie just completed their ‘Race to the Clouds” as they competed in the 85th running of the Pike Peak International Hill Climb.

“This was a ton of fun”, said Cameron. He’s already planning his return to the over 14,000 foot mountain. “We’ll be a lot more prepared next time. We had no idea what to expect when we got to Colorado.”

This was the first time the NASCAR driver had driven a Protruck and admitted he faced a steep learning curve if he was to be competitive with the seasoned drivers in the Protruck Off-Road Racing Series. The spec truck series was created by Ivan ‘Ironman’ Stewart and is headquartered in Cameron’s hometown of El Cajon, California.

Cameron and Collie finished a respectable 7th of ten competitors despite rolling the no. 212 Toyota Protruck on qualifying day. Crew chief Jeremy Spirkoff along with team members Richie Weeks and Kaye Reshaw were quick to make repairs to the truck. Cameron never missed a run.

“It’s really about seat time,” continued Cameron. “I would have loved to just drive the route a bunch of times before the race. It would have helped.”

Collie expressed confidence in Cameron’s ability to pilot just about any kind of vehicle on any kind of course. “That’s a scary road but I was like,” That’s fine, it’s Austin’…. That’s what he does. He’s a racer.”

“I’d love to do it again,” added Cameron.
