TOM SMITH WINS FIGURE 8S & STEVE SMITH WINS BSR WEST LATE MODELS
Date: 07/29/2007
It turned out to be a needless concern. Smith set fast time in qualifying and raced to his 10th straight win in the 30-lap main event at Orange Show Speedway, the ASA-sanctioned quarter-mile at the National Orange Show Events Center.
The win, over “Barefoot Billy” Ziemann of Bloomington and Rusty Stewart of Long Beach, was worth $1,500 to the 32-year-old mechanic from Lakewood and maintained his undefeated status.
The added-money event brought out four new entries, including former champion Rod Proctor, of Riverside. But Smith started on the pole in the 10-car field and never was in danger of losing the lead in a race that entertained a crowd of approximately 3,100.
Wildomar’s Matt Goodwin, 18, got his second Stock Pony win of the season by being in the right place – third – when second-place Jim Edmiston and leader Jim Mardis got into a shoving match on a green-white-checkered restart after the seventh caution flag of what ended up being a 28-lap main event.
Goodwin had led two laps early, after leader Edmiston and second-place Mardis inadvertently got together when Waldo Barber spun on lap 9. Edmiston was forced to leave the track to have bodywork pulled off a tire and dropped to the rear of the field, then worked his way back to the front after Mardis took the lead on lap 12. He got by Goodwin for second on lap 22 to set up the final incident.
The Stock Pony fireworks were the kind most often seen this season in the BSR West Late Model races. But Saturday night, that class ran an uneventful 30-lap main dominated by fast qualifier and pole-sitter Steve Smith, 32, of San Bernardino, in his Chevrolet-powered Dodge Intrepid. Smith led every lap and the top three of Smith, Jim Conklin and Dave Arce never changed.
One Conklin did make it to victory circle when Cliff Conklin, 50, the younger of the brothers from Big Bear, captured the 30-lap Street Stock feature over fast qualifier Kyle Meyer, 19, of Highland.
Chad Schug of Oak Hills capped a perfect night of Legends Cars competition by winning a crash-filled 25-lap main event that saw only nine of the 17 starters running at the finish. Schug, 20, also set fast time and won the 4-lap Trophy Dash and an 8-lap heat race in his scale-model ’37 Ford sedan. Orange Show Speedway Race Results -- 07/28/2007
