DOUGLAS COUNTY FAIR RACES DELIVER

While Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kurt Busch have both vaulted from the Legends Series to NASCAR stardom, Scott Moore was just happy to record a feature win during Saturday’s county fair races at the Douglas County Speedway.

Moore, of Kalispell, Mont., started on the outside of the front row of an impressive 24-car grid. The race, scheduled for 60 laps, found pole sitter Scott Dalla, also of Kalispell, lead the field for the first 10 laps before Nick Johnson, Bonney Lake, Wash., assumed the lead. But following a caution on Lap 27, Moore found a gap on the inside of Johnson as the pair drove through Turn 2 into the backstretch, and led the remainder of the event’s circuits.

“A lot of our tour drivers had difficulty driving through Turn 2 and thankfully I was able to stay clean,” Moore said. “We had a lot of fun competing in this event,”

Legends Cars race in more than 40 states and 300 different tracks and will be competing next at the national qualifier at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The cars are powered by 1250 cc sealed Yamaha engines with 122 horsepower. The bodies range from 10 different styles from 1934, ’37 and ’40 Ford coups and sedans to 1937 Chevys and Dodges.

Three different classes competed simultaneously within the event. There were six entries from the pro division, 11 semi-pros and eight masters, drivers that are at least 40 years old. Garret Sisk, Yakima, Wash., 13 years old and Natilie Sinner, Bellvue, Wash., 14, represented the youth of the semi-pros.

Johnson wound up finishing second and Dalla held on for third. Alex Kerslake, Maple Valley, Wash., 17, was crowned the semi-pro winner and Randy Schaaf, Fife, Wash., was the top master.

Also making their only Douglas County Speedway stop this season was the Thunder Roadsters.

Mike Ward was the opposite of superstitious in his No. 13 green race car and the Rio Dell, Calif driver raced to an easy victory in the 14-car, 40-lap main. Dave Henderson, Fortuna, Calif., and Troy Combs, Eureka, Calif., finished second and third respectively.

Dan Fouts, Vern Scevers, Willie Thompson and David Lyons all recorded individual main event wins in their respective classes during the local portion of the race card.

Fouts paced the 13-car Street Stock field by grabbing the lead during the first 10 laps and cruised to the 30-lap race win. Gary Perry was second and Amos Rhodes finished third.

Scevers dropped his motor into Ed Dimmick’s Limited Sprintcar and then drove the No. 44 to victory. Scevers easily handled the six-car field with Tim Alberding and Kent Bower placing second and third.

Thompson had to pass 11 cars to win the Modified main and he did so midway through the 40-lap main before distancing his No. 19 from the rest of the field. Sam Potter and teammate Rod Taguchi trailed Thompson to the checkered flag.

Lyons continued his dominance of the Hornet class main events with another victory. Saturday’s fair race featured a season-high 16 Hornets with drivers Robert Martin, Joshua Brink and Chris Allmedinger making their debuts. Promoter Adam Nelson continued his on-track antics by racing a sedan, pulling an ironclad horse trailer during the Hornet main. Nelson’s shenanigan was to help promote the Eve of Destruction event planned for Aug. 25.

Racing resumes Saturday at the Douglas County Speedway and ASA Member Track and will feature another installment of the $5 Fever Series. All adults will be admitted for $5 with no charge for children 12 and under.
