MINEGAR TALKS ABOUT HIS TEAM AS THE RMCS SEASON WINDS DOWN
ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE SERIES
Source: RMCS Media Relations
![]() BOISE, Idaho You could poll 100 championship winning drivers and they will likely tell you that winning the first championship is easier than defending and winning the second championship. Defending RMCS champion David Minegar of Boise would likely agree as he finds himself in second place in the ESI Rocky Mountain Challenge Series point standings heading into the second to last event of the season after leading the standings most of the year.
Minegar has started every race in RMCS history but knows the next one is always the toughest. Minegar and the rest of the tour regulars head to Rocky Mountain Raceways located outside of Salt Lake City, Utah tomorrow night for the annual running of the NAPA “125”. Minegar has dominated the previous two races at RMR this season earning quick time and winning both events. Making it a three-peat may be a tall order, but history has a way of repeating itself. We sat down with Minegar on the eve of the race and talked about his season, his team, and his racing goals.
You have dominated RMR this season. What do you attribute your success and what will it take to three-peat? I think racing always is one of those sports that you can prepare and prepare and bad luck can just bite you. I have had winning cars in the past at RMR, but it usually takes a little luck to win. I have had great luck at RMR this year.
The championship has essentially come down to three and maybe four drivers. Rate your chances and what it is going take? I feel very confident that we can repeat as RMCS champions. We have last years experience to lean on, and we don’t have a lot of pressure on us to win. We are just going to RMR to win and everything else will fall where it may.
Larry Bowers is a big part of your team. What does Larry bring and how has he impacted the team? Larry has been a crew chief on late models since he was a teenager, and I am constantly leaning on his past experience. Larry and I both learning this new big spring car and it has been a lot if fun. It has taken him back to the days when he won a Super Stock Championship with his big spring car.
What is your set up for a 125 lap race versus the distance of the last two at RMR? We have been working on our shock package, which seems to be constantly changing. We are doing everything we can to help the tires last through the long events.
How would you rate the RMCS versus other touring series out there? Competition, quality of equipment, fun???? My team and I are having a blast this year. The level of competition is better this year than it ever has been in the RMCS. I look at the competition I’m battling for a championship and it just doesn’t get any better. I have no doubt in my mind that the RMCS puts on some of the best shows for the fans. I encourage anyone that wants to see great side by side racing, and lots of passing to come watch the NAPA 125 this weekend at RMR.
How has it been working a two-car effort versus the single car operation the last three seasons? It has been great having Craig (Bell) drive the 99 this year. Craig has proven to be one of the best drivers in the RMCS. We try to give him the equipment to go out and win races. I would look for Craig to be running up front at RMR where he has won before. I think the second car has actually helped our program on the 9 car. It is great to have Craig to talk to about what the cars are doing and what he feels like the track is doing.
What are your racing goals? This season, next five years? Our team started off the season saying that our goal was to win races. We won that championship last year and sometimes found ourselves “points racing”. We opened the season knowing we would be sorting out a new car and we had no idea how long it would take to get a handle on this new chassis. I look ahead with two races to go and the same mentality that we are going to have to go out a win races to win this championship. My goal has always been to go as far as I can in racing. I would love the opportunity to race in the upper echelons of NASCAR, but I am focusing right now enjoying every moment with my team.
What do you like to do when not racing? I didn’t know there was such a thing as not racing…..HAH HAH….I love to be on the lake. I am an avid water-skier and wakeboarder. My perfect weekend away from racing would be in McCall, Idaho enjoying the mountains and the lake.
