SAN BERNARDINO, California – The Orange Show Quarter Midget Racing Association, which is nearing the end of a successful first season at Orange Show Speedway, this weekend is hosting the Desert Shootout invitational.

Orange Show club spokesperson Kandice Attridge said they are anticipating between 75 and 100 entries for the first of what they hope will become an annual event for the young men and women ages 5 to 16 who race ¼-scale open-wheel Midget cars powered by 120-150cc motors.

Clubs from Madera in Northern California, Tucson and Phoenix in Arizona and Albuquerque, N.M., have been invited to join the host club.

The event will get under way with registration and open practice beginning at 5 p.m. Friday (Aug. 31). Saturday there will be controlled practice, qualifying and heat races and Sunday will be devoted to main events.

Activity will begin at 9 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday, and the public is invited to attend free of charge.

All the racing action will take place on the association’s 1/20th of a mile oval in the infield of the Orange Show Speedway’s quarter-mile track. The drivers are split into two groups – Juniors (5 to 8 years old) and Seniors (9-16) – and there are 17 classes in all.

The Orange Show Quarter Midget Racing Association, former after the demise of the Pomona Valley club, has a long-term contract with Orange Show Speedway, which is the oldest short track in California.
