WEST SERIES: TITLE TO DAVID, RACE TO HOLMES AT ALTAMONTGOODYEAR TIRES
Source: Lee Elder
The title is David’s first in Grand National competition and he didn’t clinch the championship until the final race of the season. Goodyear is the exclusive tire provider for the Grand National Division, which also includes the Busch East Series. Goodyear’s position with the Grand National Division means that drivers in NASCAR’s top five series all compete on Goodyear tires. “Our Goodyear Eagles performed up to our expectations,” said Goodyear’s Chad Fletcher. “The teams were pleased with the tire performance.” Eric Holmes, the 2006 West Series champion, won the race at Altamont. Holmes ran a limited schedule in 2007, but his victory at Altamont secured him a position in the Toyota Shootout at Irwindale Speedway in October. David Mayhew started 21st in the race and finished second, followed by David, Kyle Cattanach and Jason Bowles. Mike Duncan, the last driver with a chance to steal the championship from Mike David, finished seventh at Altamont.
Brian Ickler won the Bud Pole Award with a lap of 100.346 mph around Altamont’s half-mile oval. Holmes averaged 57.297 mph for the race. There were 32 entries and 28 cars in the starting field.
