While most race tracks are wrapping up their racing seasons and choosing the menu for their awards banquets, there are other tracks who are now ready to start their new seasons by choosing to run in the winter months. Chief among them is the Lucas Oil I 10 Speedway located at the Colorado River Fairgrounds in Blythe-California. The quarter mile paved oval will officially kick off their 2007-2008 Winter Blast Series this Friday, with a test and tune session, and Saturday the 29th when they'll present a full night of stock car action.
Opening night of the Winter Blast is sponsored by Coca Cola and will feature racing action from the JB&B Late Models, the Torco Fuel Street Stocks and the Lucas Oil Factory Stocks. Making the evening extra special will be a Winter Blast tradition: an opening night appearance by the ASA Speed Truck Challenge Series who will treat the fans to a 100 lap feature.
In JJ&B Late Model action 2006-2007 series champion Chris Gerchman is expected to return to Blythe to defend his title. It was an extremely tight points race and Gerchman finished the season with a slim 12 point lead over Victor Pfluger. Pfluger will definitely be at the Lucas Oil I 10 Speedway Saturday night and the 16 year old driver is expected to once again double his driving duty. In addition to driving his family owned late model car, Pfluger will also be in his Dodge Dakota Truck to race in the ASA Speed Truck 100 lapper where he's trying to secure a 2007 series title. Also be on the look out for some strong driving effort from Ron Daniel who tied Pfluger for second in last year's standings. The same can be expected from former track champion Mark Schriner who finished fourth in the title run last year only 28 markers away from first. The JJ&B Late Model Series has always been a major part of the Lucas Oil I 10 Speedway's Winter Blast Series and its fans expect to be treated to more of the same Saturday night.
Still another one of the speedway's popular racing staples is the Torco Fuel Street Stocks. During the 2006-2007 Winter Blast the fans were treated to an incredibly tight points championship run that saw Ryan Kerr claim the title by a mere two points over Richard Selph. Those two drivers had their hands, and rear view mirrors, full with Danny Dill and Dusty Hope who were also serious title contenders throughout the previous Winter Blast.
Without question one of the most popular reasons that makes the fans want to come out to the Winter Blast is the presence of the Lucas Oil Factory Stocks. This is an extremely affordable entry level into Saturday night racing and the action is the personification of the old saying "racing is rubbing." John Lowrence is expected to be back to defend his series title and is also expected to be very busy fending off the challenges from previous Winter Blast rivals Jason Freeman, Brian Sutterfield and Joe Stewart among others.
The ASA Speed Truck Challenge Series will be bringing a lot more than just 100 laps of exciting racing to Blythe this Saturday night. They will also be bringing some genuine points drama. Saturday night's race at the Lucas Oil I 10 Speedway is the next to the last one on the regional touring series' 2007 schedule. Two time, and reigning, series champion Darren Young goes into Saturday night with a very slim nine point lead over the aforementioned Victor Pfluger and the race in Blythe is going to play a huge role in what is expected to be the closest championship run in the series' 11 year history.
The speedway will host a Friday night test and tune session from 4 to 9 pm and many of the teams, especially the Speed Trucks, are expected to participate. It's the perfect opportunity for the teams to get their pre race set ups in place before the green flag falls on the new season the following night. On Saturday the gates will open at 5 pm with the racing getting underway at 7 pm. For more information dial up the speedway's official website at i10speedway. com.
