NEW YEARS EVE WILL COME EARLY AT THE HAVASU 95 SPEEDWAY
Source: Dave Gdrayson
While many of us have already made plans to ring in 2008 on Monday night, December 31st, the innovative, and always fun, people at the Havasu 95 Speedway will be celebrating a day early. The most scenic quarter mile oval in the southwest, located in beautiful Lake Havasu City-Arizona, will welcome the new year on Sunday, December 30th, with a very special Sunday afternoon of ASA sanctioned stock car racing followed a New Year's Eve party complete with live music. All of this fun is being presented by Drive Thru Banking.
Highlighting the racing portion of the program will be the speedway's ASA Street Stocks who will run a 75 lap feature with $1,000 going to the winner. On any given Saturday night the speedway's Street Stock program provides the fans with plenty of high flying action. The excitement is likely to be even more intense because this race is expected to draw a lot of out of town race teams due to the fact that many area speedways are closed for the winter combined the $1,000 winner's check which is unusually high for a Street Stock feature.
Going into Saturday night Havasu 95 Speedway regular Chip Campbell leads the Street Stock championship standings with 182 points. In four events, from the speedway's current Winter Racing Series, Campbell has one win, two top five finishes and one top ten in four races so far this season but only holds a four point lead over Jim Carlo who has also been a model of consistency this year with a tenth place finish followed by three consecutive second place finishes. But the one to watch in this division is fan favorite Rick Layman. Layman's winter racing season got off to a rocky start following a 14th place finish in the season opener. However since that time he has scored two feature wins and a fourth and that has vaulted him to third in the points standings just 12 markers away from the leader. Expect all three of these drivers to play a major role in next Sunday's race.
Also on the schedule next Sunday is the Havasu 95 Speedway's ASA Factory Stock and Factory Stock Powder Puff divisions. Dave Buntmeyer leads the Factory Stock standings with 286 points based on a very consistent five top five finishes in seven races so far this season. Stephanie Felish is second overall, and leads the Powder Puff standings, based on her two feature wins and three top five finishes.
In addition to the stock car action the Havasu 95 Speedway will also be presenting the hard hitting action of a demolition derby that features a $1,000 purse.
Once the racing is completed the new years party begins with live music along with train rides for the kids. This special event is a very special way of celebrating what has been an outstanding 2007 while, at they same time, laying the ground work for even bigger and better things in 2008.
The special weekend officially gets underway on Saturday, the 29th, when the race teams will be conducting a special test and tune session from 6 to 9 pm. The test session is free to the public. On Sunday race day the spectator gates will open at 12 noon with the green flag waving over the cars at 2 pm. Tickets are $12 general admission and $10 for seniors, military and handicapped. This special event will admit kids 6 to 16 free if accompanied by a paid adult admission. Kids 5 and under are always admitted free of charge.
Make plans to ring in 2008 early complete with some red hot stock car and demolition derby action from a speedway who knows how to entertain their fans.
