FOUR TEXAS ASPHALT TRACKS PART OF ASA MEMBER TRACK PROGRAM WITH SIGNING OF RED RIVER SPEEDWAY
Date: 02/29/2008
![]() DAYTONA BEACH, Florida– Did you know that there are only four paved oval tracks operating in the entire state of Texas? And now, with the news that Red River Speedway (RRS) has recently joined the ASA Member Track program, all four are part of the American Speed Association.
But the ASA affiliation is far from the newest thing happening at the quarter-mile racetrack located in North Wichita Falls, Texas. During the offseason the facility was purchased by Short Track Motorsports, LLC, an investment group spearheaded by Charles Turner and Mike Nowels.
Under their guidance, RRS (which first began operations in the 1950s) immediately embarked on a major renovation which will seemingly leave no significant area untouched.
The racers will appreciate the freshly paved pit area offering more than 200,000 square feet of hard surface parking and work space. Of even greater importance to the competitors is the new electronic scoring system. By incorporating transponders into each of the race cars, arguments should quickly be resolved when it comes to the “bragging rights” among the competitors.
“RRS will be a fan-friendly racetrack as well as a top-rate facility for racers” explained Mike Cooper, RRS general manager.
Fans will immediately notice the new midway area including a brand new playground for the kids and a new party deck available for rental. “We envision the party deck being used for company parties and group outings,” stated owner Mike Nowels. The deck will host up to a 100 people with food and beverage catering available. Also new this season is the addition of an autograph session prior to the races allowing fans to get an autographed picture with their favorite racer prior to race start.
The season, which starts on March 29 and runs through November 5, features an aggressive mix of local divisions and six different touring series. The regular Saturday night program includes Hornets, Chargers, Bombers and Thunder Stock divisions. Throughout the season, regional touring series will visit the track including the Texas Pro Sedans, Texas Super Racing Series, United States Super Trucks Legends, Thunder Roadsters, and NASKART.
The green flag drops at 8 p.m. every Saturday night with tickets a reasonable $10 for adults and discounts offered for youth, seniors, and military and public safety/emergency services personnel. For the complete schedule, updated news, and other information visit www.RedRiverSpeedway.net.
Fans will also notice the addition of the ASA Member Track logo around the facility. “The ASA sanction improves our visibility in the short track world and adds credibility among the racers”, explained Cooper. The insurance package that comes with the ASA Member Track program is a major plus with ASA members in good standing eligible for a $500,000 Excess Medical benefit as well as a $20,000 Accidental Death and Dismemberment benefit (complete details are available online at www.ASA-Racing.com).
ASA members in good standing are eligible for a $500,000 Excess Medical Benefit as well as a $20,000 Accidental Death and Dismemberment Benefit. Coverage for the member begins while traveling to a location promoting an ASA-sanctioned event and continues until arrival home again. The American Speed Association is the only sanctioning body to offer insurance coverage which extends beyond the boundary of the racetrack itself (complete details are available online at www.ASA-Racing.com).
“I’m really excited that the deal was put together and Red River Speedway joins the other paved tracks in Texas in the ASA program,” said Dennis Huth, president of Racing Speed Associates which owns the American Speed Association. “It’s certainly exciting to see tracks like these work together on programs. That will certainly create a buzz in the regions surrounding each of the four tracks and be something the fans will keep track of and look forward to the events at their favorite track.”
“I also have to commend Charles (Turner) and the group at Short Track Motorsports for the changes and money they are putting into the racetrack so soon after completing the deal to buy it. They are proving that they understand the needs of the fan and what it takes to keep them happy and coming back. The word will quickly get through the community and I will think that they will benefit with full grandstands this year. It will be a pleasure to work with everyone at Red River Speedway this year and well into the future,” Huth added.
