The Doug Crandall Law Firm is sponsoring the first two races in the Idaho Cup’s three race series. The Idaho Cup combines two races at Meridian Speedway on April 4th and 5th and August 30th and 31st with a two race night at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls on October 4th and 5th. Hoosier Racing Tires is sponsoring the Idaho Cup Series and is awarding a complete set of race tires to the overall winner of the three races. The winner of the three race series will be crowned the Idaho Champion and will take home a $1000 winners purse. Last year’s track champion, Tim Lawrence, is one of the heavy favorites for the upcoming event. Lawrence won $3000 ,the biggest payoff of his career, in the 100 lap invitational race last September and had seven quick times during qualifying last season. Other drivers expected to race in the series are Meridian Speedway Grand American Modified drivers, Jeff Hill, Al Colwell, Chris Fenton, Jeff Goade, Dennis Wurtz, Jeff Wurtz and Magic Valley Speedway drivers Rick Fowble, Sam Harris and others. Grand American Modified touring drivers Jentry Pisca and Shelby Stroebel are also expected to be there. Last year’s track champion Winged Sprint driver, Brandon Johnson, will be making his Grand American Modified debut on April 4th and is expected to race the entire series. Johnson is active with the World of Outlaws racing series on west coast dirt tracks and is nicknamed the “Idaho Outlaw”. Johnson also races in the Indoor Outlaw Kart Association in the winter months and is behind the wheel of a racecar or Kart every month of the year. Tom Hill, Rocky Mountain Challenge Series late model driver, will bring out his modified to compete for the money and Troy Ermish, SRL - Southwest Tour, late model driver from California, will also be traveling to race in the Idaho Cup series. On Friday, April 4th, the race format for the Modifieds will be twin 25 lap races to determine the starting position for the 125 lap event on Saturday. The top 18 will be locked in to Saturday’s 125 lap A main while the rest will run in Saturday’s 40 lap B main. The top 4 finishers of the B main will transfer to the A main with a shot at the big money. The fastest qualifier will draw for the invert to determine the starting position. The race on Saturday will be broken up with a mandatory stop after 75 laps. The cars will be allowed to return to the pits while the fans take a stretch. The race will restart after ten minutes and then there will be a 50 lap sprint to the checkered. There will no be restrictor plates and no “claimer” rule for the series and the tires will be the Hoosier 970. In addition to the Grand American Modifieds, Meridian Speedway will run a full schedule with opening races of most of the other classes that regularly appear at the quarter mile oval. On Friday the Late Model Lites, Street Stocks and Thunder Stocks will run 25 to 35 lap mains along with trophy dashes and heat races. Saturday will bring out the Super Stocks, Mini Stocks and Hornets with the same format as on Friday for a combined two day total of over 450 laps of racing for the fans.
