RACE RECAP - APRIL 26, 2008 – THUNDERHILL RACEWAY, KYLE, TEXAS

John Wilson Grand Stock 35

The Grand Stock class ran a special 35-lap Memorial race in honor of John Wilson who lost his battle with cancer. Wilson, a long time race fan then crew chief for wife Kris was remembered by family and friends before the start Grand Stock feature.

At the start, Cody Smith got the lead from the pole, with Carolyn Aramendia falling into second. C. Aramendia showed her driving skills as she used the high side to get by Smith for the led on lap 3. C. Aramendia ran out to nearly a half track lead until Steve Dalrymple spun twice to bring out a yellow.

With two lapped cars as a buffer, C. Aramendia was able quickly rebuild her lead over Smith, Richard Fitch and Bryon Reed. Fitch and Reed continued their battle to the finish, while C. Aramendia showed she wasn't the only racer in the Aramendia household running away with victory.

Thunder Stocks

A lucky 13-cars started the Thunder Stock feature with Scott Schwiesfurth getting the early lead. Joey Jenkins got under Schwiesurth and took the point on lap 4, while Steve Joyce challenging Anthony Gordon for second. Joey Tschoerner and James Huff made contact sending Huff spinning to the infield. On the restart, Gordon tried Jenkins for the lead but got sideways, losing second to Joyce while Tschoerner, Schweisfurth and Butch Teague made contact trying to avoid Gordon.

On the restart, Mason Teague was trying the high side on Bryon Reed for third, while Joyce was spinning from second. As green waved again, Gordon got the nose under Jenkins. Going into turn 1, Jenkins tried to get back to the bottom, but Gordon was already there sending both around. Gordon was put in the lead, with Jenkins sent to the tail.

Back to green, M. Teague got by Reed for second with Schweisfurth spinning on lap 15 for a yellow. M. Teague quickly began putting pressure on the young Gordon with the two side by side on lap 18. Gordon gave p the lead after getting loose on lap 19. Jenkins brought out caution on lap 20 when he looped it on the back stretch.

M. Teague got away from Gordon, who got sideways, as green waved again. Tschoerner, with nowhere to go, finished off Gordon sending him all the way around. In the final laps, M. Teague was able to pull ahead from Tschoerner and James Lynch, to go on to take the win.

ASA A-Line Super Stocks

The always competitive ASA A-Line Auto Parts Super Stocks 40 lap feature saw Greg Rohmer get the lead on lap despite getting a little sideways when the green waved. Mathew Hodges was able to get inside Rohmer on lap 3 and get the top spot on lap 4. As the top three sorted out single file a good nine car, side by side battle was brewing behind them.

That scrap came up on a slower car with Chris Birmingham and Clint Lafont getting picked on the high side and loosing many positions. On lap 12 Duane Toyne and Mickey McKim were battling for position when they made contact and spun. On the restart, Keith Garrett rooted out Mark Mathias for fourth followed by Shawn Paul Lehman, but Steve Richardson spun to bring on the backstretch. As the field came around to yellow, Garrett, Terry Tschoerner, Mathias and Brent Reeves got together.

Once back to green, Hodges got loose, with Rohmer getting the lead back on lap 14, while Mathias and Garrett moved into second and third. Mathis got inside Rohmer on lap 15 taking over the top spot on lap 16, followed by Garrett. Lehman and defending track champ, Cary Stapp kept Rohmer hung out high taking over third and fourth.

Rohmer's luck went from bad to worse as he blew up on lap 19, laying down fluid in turn 2. Behind Rohmer, the field slipped, slid and spun in the mess. After a lengthy clean up, the field went back to green, tip-toeing through the kitty litter. At halfway it was Mathias, Garrett, Lehman, Stapp and Larry Stein in the top five.

As the top four began to pull away, Lafont got under Stein for fifth. Garrett was putting the heat on Mathias for the lead, until Birmingham, McKim and Rodney Rodriguez tangled on lap 27. During the yellow, race director Rick Day, cut the race due to time, leaving five laps to the finish. Once back to green the top five stayed single file and checked out, with Mathias holding off that pack for the victory.
