HOT NIGHT OF VARIED COMPETITION AT YAKIMA SPEEDWAYYAKIMA, Washington – The huge crowd attending the races at Yakima Speedway Saturday night were treated to a varied racing program. The sun drenched fans watched the exciting stockcar classes along with the first ever, King of the Hill, drag race competition.

Speedway officials set up a 1/8-mile drag strip using the front stretch and the hot pit lane. Eleven cars and trucks took part in the event. The overall King of the Hill winner was local racer Chris Clark in his fast Chevelle. The speedway is considering having more drag race competitions.

The stockcar fans were not left out as the Super Stocks, Hobby Sportsman, Hornets and Bump to Pass cars put on a great night of racing. The racing started at 6:45 and the last checkered flag flew at 10:29.

The headline Super Stocks held a thrilling 30 lap main event. Rich Peters, driving the Greg Peterson owned Ford, held the lead for 23 laps. Hot on his bumper was new track record holder, Brian Pepper. The two youngsters had a spirited battle for many laps before Pepper made a strong move to take over the point. Brian’s father, Mike, was able to also squeeze past Peters to score a second place. Tony Huffines and Jim Zorrouza rounded out the top five.

In the 35-lap Hobby main, defending champion, Bryan Moser scored his first win of the year. A good field of 15 cars took the green. During the hotly contested event, that had the crowd on their feet, 11 different drivers were scored at least one lap in the lead. The crowd saw the very best Hobby Stock racers in the Northwest as they battled cleanly and with great respect for the fellow competitors.

Rich Strimska won the Bump to Pass main and A.J. Rose won the Hornets. The Youth Hornets, while a small field at this time, was great to watch. The competitors are leaning great skills and show tremendous improvement in just two events. Jacob Little won with Cord Jackman in second and Jeffery Baker Jr. in third.

Next race at the facility is May 24th. The opening race for the ASA Northwest Tour is set for gates opening at 4:00, time trials at 5:00 and racing at 7:00. A good field of cars is expected and the local Super Stocks and Hobby Sportsman classes are also on the card.
